DETROIT (AP)Armando Galarraga(notes) squeezed the ball in his mitt, stepped on first base with his right foot and was ready to celebrate the first perfect game in Detroit Tigers history.
What happened next will be the talk of baseball for the rest of this season and likely a lot longer. Tigers' Armando Galarraga(notes) lost his bid for a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning on the disputed call at first base. Detroit won 3-0.
Umpire Jim Joyce emphatically called Clevelands Jason Donald(notes) safe and a chorus of groans and boos echoed in Comerica Park.
Then Joyce emphatically said he was wrong.

“Another thought, why didnt the home plate umpire reverse the call? He would have been doing everyone a favor and there should not have been any complaints.”
Also, why didn’t the runner admit he was out? The Indians weren’t going to win anyway, and he’d get his name in the headlines.
