The Shield and The Wire are both on my list to see in the near future — they’ve come VERY highly recommended, but I can’t vouch personally.
I recommend both shows highly, but if we're sticking to shows that can be watched with a 16-year old daughter, then I'd have to say that both of these shows are way, WAY outside of that category.

Are they any worse than 24? Jack gutted a guy like a fish about two hours ago ... after thumping on his kidneys for a while, ripping off a piece of flesh with pliers, and blowtorching him.
