Vanity- Looking for a TV series on DVD to begin watching. Any suggestions?

I don’t watch TV, but I own a few series on DVD that I watch in order to avoid commercials and to watch on my own time.

I’m looking for something that doesn’t insult my spiritual or political (Christian Conservative) beliefs. And I don’t want comedies that exist on juvenile sexual innuendoes.

I love and own the first five seasons of LOST and THE OFFICE. I have the first two seasons of 24, but quit when I saw that the producers are too cowardly to depict Muslim terrorists not backed by white corporate types as the bad guys. I also have BAND OF BROTHERS and the first 10 seasons of THE SIMPSONS.

I was thinking of getting the first season of SCRUBS except I’m uncomfortable watching with my 16 year old daughter because of the frequent sexual situations.

I heard good things about CHUCK.

Any suggestions for a series I can get into?

I still watch that on Cartoon Network after the kids go to bed. LOVE that show!

I wonder what Dale’s screen name on FR would be? LOL

"and one of my favorites (but no one else in the house likes them) - “Last of the summer wine”"

That has got to be one of the most painfully unfunny shows I've ever seen. Even my older parents couldn't stand it and they love British shows.

I agree with Rome. Yeah, you would see worship of false gods as well as sex (but no innuendo), but it’s all in an appropriate context. I was frustrated with some of their historical inaccuracies and time compression, but overall, it’s a fascinating history.

Bones is terrible. The plots are far too simplistic and contrived, and the premise that the titular character is frighteningly intelligent yet incapable of figuring out social niceties is unrealistic,

In your humble opinion, you say?

The only problem with 'Bones' for me is that the original premise has now been worked fully. The show needs to step up, which I think is the plan. And I am not sure that intelligence is mapped correlatively with social intuition. The premise always was that Dr. Brennan had been put into the foster system as a teenager and withdrew emotionally for the next 15 years. Only when she partnered up with Booth, an exceptionally skilled and personable man with a tremendous sense of charity, that she started learning the nuances we all take so much for granted.

Warehouse 13 is pretty good...supernatural sci-fi with humor.

Any votes for CHUCK?

It was amusing the first season, but season two has really ruined it. IMHO, of course.

Chuck is pretty good as a comedy for the first two seasons. Then, inexplicably, in the third season they start trying to make the show into a more serious spy thriller, which fails miserably, in my opinion.

The only ones I ever liked were ‘To the Manor Born’ and ‘Are You Being Served?’ I would figure the latter would be uncomfortable for anyone easily offended by double entendres. The former is simply charming from beginning to end. ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ isn’t even as charming as ‘Ballykissangel’, which wore out its welcome in about a season and a half for me (the concepts are similar).

Jag was great - pro-military and pro-America. Plus the luscious Catherine Ross. I miss that show!

If you like cutting and dry British humor, I suggest the BBC BLACKADDER series from the 1980’s. It’s still popular and you can buy it on Amazon.

You’ll recognize the actors. Blackadder (played by Rowen Atkinson - Mr. Bean) and his cohort (Hugh Laurie of House) play historical characters throughout British History. The Episodes on Elizabethan England, George III and especially WWI are the BEST.

I highly recommend the 70s Japanese television series Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman, available on Amazon and Netflix. Also the British comedy Open All Hours (my husband’s favorite comedy series ever).

Jericho. Hands down. Second season isn’t as good, but the first is awesome.
