As a friend of a hikers family, I would say to all previous comments: Not Funny! I had a similar reaction when I heard of the hikers - what were they thinking - that was a LONG time ago. We/they are dealing with the same mentality Islamic extremism that stormed our embassy (Iran) beheaded Daniel Pearl (Pakistan) took down the twin towers (al Qaida) etc.etc. You should be pulling for the hikers at this point.

They are charged as spies(?) What trade secrets were up in the hills near the border? Or what lockpicking or eavesdropping tools were they carrying to compromise the palace??? We don’t even know that the border was crossed in the first place, just that this regime enjoys holding Americans. These could be YOUR young adults who made this mistake or walked into this trap. That doesn’t mean they deserve what they are getting. I repeat: NOT FUNNY to blame the hikers for false imprisonment on the whims of a perverted regime to hold for no reason.

Free Republic is the best news collection site on the internet in the world and my most frequented destination. However I never give and I never link directly to the site because I do not wish to associate with the majority of the comments. IMHO the lightness and banter take away from the seriousness of the issues. (I am on your team politically.)

Feel free to flame me back for my first post since signing a decade(?) ago, I would rather see you flame the Mullahs. I will read but not plan on bantering back.

Respectfully, DM

>>NOT FUNNY to blame the hikers

Nope, certainly not.

What one can blame is their intelligence or lack of it.

And ignorance about borders and an arrogance that they would be OK no matter what.

Hiking? What about the Alps, the Andes, the Himalayas or the Good old Rockies, Cascades, Alaska or British Columbia.

In Kurdistan on the Irani border??!~!!?

They are now pawns in the Great Game between nations; the Iranians want some of their people held by the US released.

They have no one but themselves to blame.

Hiking in a war zone is never a good idea. Unless you are an escaping refugee or a armed participant in a conflict in the region (Turkish military, Kurdish militia, Kurdish separatists, Iranian military, or a smuggler) then you don’t belong there.

Why did they go there voluntarily? Rockies not cool enough to hike?

I wish them good health and would like to see their safe and swift return.

Yet, in all seriousness, I have to say they are some dumb people.
