Yep. Sad day indeed but Ernie said this was just another adventure that God had set for him.

Just heard. Grew up listening to Ernie with the Tigers. The man with the sharp voice that came out of the cheap table radio in stereo, even though it wasn't stereo.

Godspeed to a truly good man.

"Called strike threee, and he stood there, like a house, by the side of the road!"

"And there's a foul ball into the stands, and a man from Gaylord, Michigan caught that one."

"Mom, how does he know who caught that?"

Tears.

From the other thread.

Ernie’s farewell speech at Comerica park last year. An awesome speech by a man whole loved the crowd as much as we loved him.

That photo would have been from his “retitrement” at Tiger Stadium. His retirement really didn’t mean much when he still showed up for work a good bit of the time till last year.

The Braves announcers noted his passing during the radio broadcast. Don Sutton seemed very sad.

I felt like you when Skip Carrey passed last year.
Sorry for y’alls loss.

He is right up there with Harry Caray, Jack Buck and Vin Scully..

Great Americans !

Not only did he love baseball. He loved this country and was a wonderful American.

He is right up there with Harry Caray, Jack Buck, and Vin Scully..

Yes, each had their favorite little signature expressions when announcing a game.

Harwell and Harry Caray combined to do the 1968 World Series (Tigers vs. Cards) on TV. That was back when the World Series network TV announcers were the regular local announcers for the respective teams.

Scully, about 82, is still going strong doing the Dodgers on TV in his 61st year with them. It's much tougher now on announcers what with the number of teams, the higher rate of player movement from team to team, and the numerous foreign names, but Scully hardly misses a beat.
