Sirens going off, it’s 5:20 pm. Much of the town of Millington, TN is under water. Now they evacuated the Navy base housing. We heard the weather alarm going off repeatedly for our neighbors in MS and AR. Tornados, flood, etc. Real scary situation for this Tri-Sate area of Memphis.
Awhile back I was looking at photos of the Arizona desert where the illegals slink through, and in there was a picture of the mountains. This got me to thinking of the mountains I grew up with and hiked through in Montana. This remembrance set my mind to working, and I had an urge to walk through them once more. That muse set my mind to working on this poem.
High Country Cathedral
I long for the high places, swept by errant airs
Singing the songs of the mountains of my home
Where the crisp air, holds no memory of man
And a place my soul can truly once again roam
Rocks, carved by time and the weathering wind
Into vast sculptures only God could have made
Here my old soul longs to be, in peace at last
Here restfully, my tattered soul to be finally laid
Where eagles soar above me in freedom grand
And tanagers flit from tree to tree so utterly free
Like a golden dream, set loose in a resting mind
Lifting into unknown heights, wherever it may be
Here the concept of time falls away so easily
Where day or night is the choice you but live
And you walk in a realm of silence so real
You can hear your heart beating to strive
Vistas beyond your power to pierce or grasp
Setting you in the true scale of eternity vast
You are humbled to realize you are a mote
A mere speck the fates play with to the last
Here on the granite bones of earth I stand
Part of all, as all is part of me, once again
Under the star lamps lit for me by God
I give my thanks, amid the celestial din
Happy MAY 1 to you all, from Nan and I!!!!!
Boy, is that cute, Meg!
