Have you heard yet about the sequel to the movie `Descent’:
`Descent 2’?

Just introduce the Aliens to Whiskey.

It worked 150 years ago.

Agreed. 100%

I have a hypothesis on why we don’t find alien versions of “I Love Lucy” on our radiotelescopes. Call it The Dark Star Hypothesis after Dan O’Bannon’s movie.

An alien civilization with the personality of North Korea long ago decided to wipe out any potential competitors. So they launched billions of nanoprobes to every star in our galaxy where they wait in the local Oort Cloud. The nanoprobes wait until they detect intelligent radio signals. Then the probe pushes a large asteroid/comet into a path so that it will impact the offending planet. The nanoprobe then self-destructs. A hundred or so years later the nascent competitor civilization is destroyed.

The original aliens have total plausible deniability. An errant nanoprobe may even have killed off it’s creators.

I find this hypothesis more plausible than Carl Sagan’s “they polluted themselves to death” or “they wiped themselves out with nukes” hypotheses.

“I just don’t see the economic benefit in raiding Earth for mineral wealth”

I say we do it anyway.

When they finally field a telescope that is able to see to the edge of space, they may actually find a big eyeball staring back at them, as we are probably some aliens idea of petri dish.

It's actually a sign that reads;

"Last stop before Earth (remember what happened last time)"

He said: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

Intergalactic "casino earthlings"? OK, why not?

As Fermi said “Where are they?”

Exactly.

There is no reason whatsoever to believe intelligent life can evolve to a state of intergalactic interaction.

There is a very powerful reason to believe that intelligent life cannot evolve to a state of intergalactic interaction, i.e. "Well then, where are they?"

The distances of space are so vast as to be incompressible.

It may well be that FTL drive IS impossible, in which case we see two things

We are totally stuck on this rock (we're boned, to quote a famous cartoon)

We are safe from any kind of space menace

“Further proof Hawking is an idiot.”

This is not a flame. Repeat, this is not a flame. Also,I am new here and I am still trying to learn Free Republic’s etiquette.

I am curious why you think he is an idiot.

The reason I ask is because I have read his book “A Brief History of Time” probably 20 times and still do not understand what he is talking about.

I always thought it was because his IQ was probably 10 times higher than mine. But I have also wondered whether the book was a hoax and or gibberish.

Have you ever come across any sites on the internet that paint his ideas as nonsense?

Thanks.

“Considering the rapidity with which technological know how is advancing here, if intelligent life developed on another planet even only a million years before Earth think how much further along they would be.”

Exactly.

I have a big problem wrapping my brain around time. We are so insignificant in the evolution of space.

Worm Holes,Black Holes,Time Machines etc

I sometimes think that we might be a cloning experience for some third grader’s science project and that he lives right beside us in another dimension that we have not yet figured out how to access.

If they have anti gravity it might not be so unsound to mine the earth. But is everything here also common in the solar system? Gold, Platinum etc?
