NEW YORK (AP) - New York City's oldest library says one of its ledgers shows that President George Washington has racked up 220 years worth of late fees on two books he borrowed, but never returned.
One of the books was the "Law of Nations," which deals with international relations. The other was a volume of debates from Britain's House of Commons.
Both books were due on November 2, 1789.
New York Society Library head librarian Mark Bartlett said the institution is not actively seeking payment of the fines, but would love to get the books back.
The ledger also lists books being taken out by other founding fathers, including Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr and John Jay.
The entry on Washington does not identify him by name, but lists the borrower simply as, "president."

Where’s the proof that W never returned the volumes?
Oh, but SEINFELD they go after?
lol.
“Right now there’s a kid opening a book in a library. But can’t read the Cat in the Hat and The Five Chinese Brothers without seeing drawings of Pee Pees and Wee Wees.” - Mr. Bookman
So what?....So does Al Bundy....
Would love to bring back the first and best President we ever had and replace the worst one we have now.
Ping
Where’s the proof that GW was the President?
As I recall, Washington was elected Apr 30, 1789, but couldn’t something like “President” just as easily be any of the Presidents of the Continental Congresses?
Couldn’t it have been the President of a local college?
President of a hotel? (Calvin Coolidge joke there — see Paul Boller’s Presidential Anecdotes).
Thanks for the ping...I have been following this story but did not send out a general ping to my list. I dunno, call me a bit suspicious of the NY libs and librarians when it comes to The General. He was a Federalist, after all...
On another thread, I saw that one of the volumes was in French, a language that he was not conversant in. Maybe it was someone in the executive branch that signed it out.
