Informal poll: SpikeTV is showing a Deadliest Warrior rerun. It has the Taliban vs. IRA. The IRA is testing the AR15 against the Taliban with the AK47. I vote for the AK47. I would like to know what you think.

As long as you stay in “the bush” 100% of the time. First time you have to cross wide open space, you are dead meat to the first fellow with a bolt gun or AR who sees you at 300 yards.
I don’t think living “in the bush” 100% of the time is feasible. A single “do it all” rifle MUST be able to protect you out to 500 yards or better.
And an AK just can’t do that. It’s fine as a squad issued weapon if you have a “designated marksmen,” but as a solo operator, it just leaves you helpless if you are caught in the open.
Useless anecdote. In his situation, a pistol would have served as well. He wasn't alone, was he? He was surrounded by a sqaud or more of riflemen, with support a radio call away.
This issue is AK vs AR, no support.
Good post. What most on this thread fail to acknowledge is that the AK is a fine close distance rifle ASSUMING you have coverage by MGs, designated marksmen/snipers etc at longer ranges.
This military unit level balance of weapons equation DOES NOT APPLY to one AK vs one AR.
Past 200 yards, a solo fellow with an AK is dead meat if he must cross open ground.
And sooner or later, everybody has to.
Are you alone with just those short range weapons when traveling around Afghanistan, or do you have somebody with you with a longer range capability?
Would you carry only an AK and a 12 guage if you had NO OTHER longer range weapon available to support you? If you were SOLO traveling around the country?
This thread is about an AR vs an AK, unsupported by any other longer range fire at any unit level.

My stock split on me after my initial trip to the range, so I bought an aftermarket Monte Carlo-style stock. It fits so much better and shooting it is easier on the shoulder, too.
That’s always an issue with bullpups, that, and changing mags in prone sucks.

That last isn’t actually true.
I'm not sure what I'd have to do to make it jam. I clean it about the same frequency as I clean my M1.

How old were the AR-15s? The original version had major jam problems that were corrected in the M-16A1 model.
Yeah. I like my Mosin. It turns heads when a round is sent down range. Big noise. I was kind of chuckling at the shockwave knocking down the other targets. The second time I took it to the range, I had an aftermarket stock on it - made it real nice to shoot. I let one of the range officers shoot it. I was standing behind and watching, and the shockwave coming off the muzzle just blew me away.
I tell him that every day!
The team includes longer range systems. PKM is a key component.
Don’t get me wrong. I liked the M16, CAR15 and M4. But those are not in the tool box I use here and now. That being the case, I have learned to use and appreciate what I’ve got.
If you had that many jams with an AR there was a problem with maintenance. Try to hit a moving target with an AR at 300 yards.
