A study more than 150 years ago, IIRC, documented that when church attendence was at its highest, drunkenness, murders etc. were at their lowest in New England.

My study of history suggests that "Peace" is an ideal we interpolate from the fact that there are pauses in between particular wars. But there's always a war going on somewhere, oppression going on somewhere, natural disasters going on somewhere ...
