I would think that many of the items you mentioned are shipped via ocean freight, so they wouldn’t be a factor in the volcano fallout.

To what extent the volcano is impacting ocean freight is unclear. Many ocean liners use GPS and I have not seen any news articles stating that satellite communications have been impacted by the volcano.

Initially, I would not think that the US would have too much of a problem because of Europe's "hiccup". Many things I mentioned are capital investment items, and quite frankly, American corporations are only judiciously investing in capital upgrades at this point in time. There will be some impact, but it will be minor, and will quickly rebound back to what the trade level would have been. This is not "chronic", but rather is a blip on the radar screen.

Not if this eruption goes on for two years, like the last one did.

“Still, my question is; will a slowdown, or a complete halt to the shipment of any of those items adversely affect the US?”

I'll focus my answer on one item that personally affects me. If this goes on for awhile, The impact on those European airlines and the aircraft orders from Boeing and Airbus that could be delayed or canceled could make the 9/11 downturn look like a slow news-day. And it won't stop with the airline industry - it could be economic chaos globally. Obama should of never tempted God with that “where is Armageddon” line.

I’m an herbalist and a lot of the herbs I buy wholesale are from Europe. Also essential oils.

Of course, most people are not herb or essential oil consumers.

Hmm, better check my inventory and do an order very soon.

“There will be some impact, but it will be minor”

You better see my post #23. I really wish you were right, but there are so many U.S. companies big and small that would be devastated by a long term interuption of the supply stream between the U.S. and Europe. For instance, Alenia Aeronautic in Naples, the builder of body sections for the 787 Dreamliner. Those body sections are flown here inside of a modified Boing 747.

" Wonder how all those greenies in Europe are enjoying their government mandated clean air. "

That means they have to depend on slower means of transportation in Europe until this passes... and if they were honest instead of promoting their leftist agenda that has nothing to do with the environment, they wish they could be traveling on a airplane now, but, now, they have to depend on a bus, car, train....

This is the sort of fine-tuned view that we're only just beginning to see, in regards to this natural disaster.

Thanks for the insight. I'm sure we'll see some well-researched articles about this aspect, soon.

We imported the root stock from Europe, but we’re growing our own socialists on college campuses around the US.

So the question is, besides making food and deli items and cars, what does Europe do all day? They must be doing something, right?

I'm stranded here in Europe. Believe me, they do a lot. If America disappeared there'd be a hurt, but they'd adapt and get along.

____

Pro golfer Jesper Parnevik won’t be bothered too much.

From: http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/04/09/1081326925933.html?from=storyrhs

(snip) Even more bizarre in his efforts to gain a competitive advantage is the Swedish professional Jesper Parnevik. While travelling in planes, he has been known to wear sunglasses with flashing lights that supposedly synchronise the left and right sides of his brain.

While the logic is harder to follow than that of the golf hat, we thought we would speculate anyway. The left side of the brain is thought to be responsible for the control of logical, rational thinking (not one of Parnevik's strong points), language and speech. The right side controls visual imagery, musical rhythm and melody, imagination and creativity.

Many people tend to have one dominant side of the brain. Learning, however, is thought to be most effective when both sides of the brain are involved in the learning process.

In golf - a game that is considered as much mental as it is physical - it's likely that both sides of the brain are required for maximal performance. Hence any attempt to synchronise both sides of the brain may be valuable. The question of how Jesper's sunglasses actually do this is something best left to the neurophysiologists.

Before rushing out to buy the hat or sunnies, a final word of caution. Last we heard, Halle was talking to the rules secretary of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St Andrews about whether his hat was primarily designed to stop the wind blowing it off players' heads, or a golf swing aid, which is illegal.

Parnevik, meanwhile, is best remembered for his three-month diet that consisted of nothing but fruit and volcanic ash in order to cleanse the body.

Seems like I have heard a lot lately about European-made windmills! Lol!
