This article is a bit deceptive. The Alder Creek campsite belonged to the extended Donner family, who were only about one-fourth of the total “Donner Party”. There is plenty of first hand testimony to cannibalism among those who camped at the other site.
I think the answer is pretty simple, the Donnor party members weren’t just throwing out human remains with other animals. They’re probably all buried at another site.
