Roger, that!
Sorry for the slow response............I've been glued to the TV.
Well said, I was thinking along those lines myself.
“Thats not fair. Pete actually had a career worth talking about.”
True...but he DID bet against his own team...or so they say...that’s what is REALLY killing his chances...and let’s face it, he wasn’t exactly Mr. Congeniality, either.
“Phil might just have 2 or 3 more jackets left in him.”
He might...but I think he’s not going to be one of the ‘greats” in golf...I think he’ll be in the “Merry Mex” category...they even have similar records...everyone loves him, he can be a real interesting and unpredictable character and he’s a good player, but when it’s all said and done...not one of the greats...hope he doesn’t get hit by lightning, like Trevino dod...who knows what he might have been? How fickle are the Golf Gods, anyway? Geesh.
Ditto
Depends what he does the rest of his career. If he can win 7 - 9 majors and over 50 PGA events (both quite reachable), he'll be up there in the rarified air.
Thank you, marshmallow. I too was glued to the TV. Congratulations, Phil.
Anynone who has won multiple majors is a great player in my book. Consider how many one-hit wonders there are. Just in the last decade we have had Todd Hamilton and Ben Curtis winning the British Open, and even David Duval may fall into that category (okay, he won a lot but after his British victory has gone AWOL, much like Ian Baker-Finch). And who can forget the immortal Orville Moody (the US Open being his one-and-only professional win), or going back even further, Jack Fleck who defeated IMHO the Greatest Of All, Ben Hogan, in a US Open playoff, and then promptly returned to obscurity.
It’s damn tough to win a major, and winning a second one is validation. Lee Trevino, for about five years, was the best player in the game. He never did well at Augusta as his swing was not right for the course. But at the US Open and British Open and the PGA he was deadly.
My favorite quote from him is: If Jack Nicklaus had to play my second shot, he’d give up the game.
And Trevino was great in HAPPY GILMORE!
Now Phil has won his fourth, and while I still get sick thinking of his 72nd hole performance at the 2006 Open, I think he’ll win another major before being done. Four puts you in pretty elite company, five even moreso.
Thanks for the thread! Great win for Phil. Took a lot of guts - or a lot of stupidity - to hit that shot on 13. Unbelievable! I knew the Gods of Golf would not let Mr Woods win this.
Congrats to Phil for winning the Masters. What a great story and I always love to see Phil win; this was awesome and to see his wife and family all around him, especially seeing what they have gone through and what is ahead of them, God Bless them. That shot between the trees was awesome!
