Hand gun advice, please

Posted on 03/24/2010 6:44:03 PM PDT by 1rudeboy

I plan on more time at the range this summer. I'd prefer to do so with reduced ammunition costs (I'm a large caliber guy). I know nothing of any caliber smaller than .40cal. I assume that something of the .38 types, or a .357mag might be cheaper, yes?

So here's the deal, here are my required specs:

semi-automatic
9mm, .38, 8mm, .32, .357mag (or something I don't know about)
magazine capacity not important
concealed-carry suitability not important (I live in Illinois)

I just want to have some fun burning-through a lot of ammo. Are there some smaller calibers I should consider? I don't want to plink with a .22--I'm not an interior designer.

You need to think of ammo availability when quantities of all ammo might be, umm, restricted. The more popular calibers are .45acp, .38s&w, 9mm and .22lr so I would suggest you stick with either a .45acp or 9mm. A suggestion would be a nice 1911 frame that shoots .45acp and get a .22lr conversion kit to practice economically.

See TRavis McGee’s posts on the CS52. Ammo is dirt cheap, yet, high performance.

Ma’am, that will flat do someone in. Hope you never have to use it, but you’re in good stead if you do.

CZ52, not CS52.

As others have said:

Sig Sauer P226 or Glock 19, both in 9mm, high capacity magazines.

IF you want to go big, get a 1911 in .45, takes a little more practice and the ammo is more expensive tho...

No question.

You aren’t gonna get ripped off on a combloc weapon.

They are sold here by Americans.

The current price on the CZ 52 is high they used to be $89 but the were only like 200,000 made in 3 yrs

The price on the CZ 82 is great. Its a superb pistol at $250, very modern, but the ammo is about 20C a rd for plinker stuff.

Its only unattractive feature is that the finish is a type of gun Kote. Which may have chips as they are used surplus.

Regular 9mm ammo can be had in that price range.
When I got a CZ 52 a few years back ammo was $50 for 1260 rds. Never seen a bad rd.

I gota go +1 on the Glock 19. Very simple and very reliable.

Also, the suggestion about the .357 magnum pistol using .38 special for target practice is exceedingly economical.
~~~~~~~~~~
Nope. 38special is expensive nowdays compared to 9mm and 40S&W. at least it was when I compared prices last summer.
Now, if you want to talk revolvers, my favorite is the S&W Model 29. It is, to me, what a .44 Magnum handgun ought to be. Damned expensive, though, but not terribly expensive to shoot. Shoot .44 Special at the range and carry .44 Magnum hollow points for business.
cheap 9mm ammo at 11 or 13$ a box of 50 from Natchez Shooter supply www.natchezss.com
That's a Dan Wesson Classic Bobtail .45 inbetween a Sig 229 and Sig 226.
I'm picking-up some information on revolvers on this thread that I didn't know, so it's a bonus . . . but yes, I meant this to be a semi-auto thread.
I love my revolver . . . it will never let me down . . . that's why I love it.
Not technically new, but in excellent or refurbished condition. look online or check shotgun news/gun digest. You won’t find one in a gun shop though.
Hungarian walthers an be bought in practically new condition for about $150.00 or less. They shoot 9x18 makarov. But you won’t find ammo for it in a typical gunshop either. You will likely have to mail order it. But it’s the cheapest thing out there.
Well, I can swap the handle with a black. I just kind of love the pink.
Is that a joke? 357sig is ridiculously high priced.
Well I ordered mine from J&G Sales directly, but I have a C&R license.
So I'll give you the standard advice. Do business with a reputable gun shop. I don't know where you are in IL but there are several in the collar counties.
I'm extremely satisfied with the ones I got and from what I've researched they 82's and pretty much all are solid buys. They're Czech made so you KNOW you're getting a quality piece.
As I said expect to pay about $250 or so. IMO that's a fair price at retail give or take.
Ammo is also relatively inexpensive considering. Just buy in bulk.
I've pinged mylife. He's also an 82 owner so he may want to share some of his experience.
Not as cheap as the 7.62x25 and the hungarian FEGS are accurate as can be But.... The Alloy frame makes them kick like a mule and the DA trigger is extremely heavy.
The SA is crisp and clean.
Oh, and I should say that I thought of someone laughing at me with a pink pistol and “figgered” that they might think that I was not “fer” real.
