So any ideas on a business I could start? Mowing lawns, I tried that but most people here either already have someone do it or they do it themselves... I suck at trying to find a business to get into. I really want to own my own business most definitely. My dream job is to be a marketing consultant :D

Get into any business. They all use marketing. Start anywhere. Thus begins your networking support. You have to start somewhere.

Try printing companies, sales positions, and community association management (the last one is almost recession proof; I say ALMOST, but the pay is usually good and you are dealing with people 24-7).

I have a co-worker who runs his own lawn and landscaping business.

He started out by asking future clients “what does the lawn guy charge you?”

He then offered them a lower rate. About five dollars.

He got and built a client list that, now, he makes more than his regular job.

Just do not price yourself into not making a profit.

A guy I know started a residential window washing business. He did it just to make money on the side in his own neighborhood. Within a year, he quit is full time job to focus on that, as so many people were looking for that service.

He started very simply, just making up door hangers and fliers and blanketing the neighborhoods around where he lives. It would be an excellent “marketing” project to have on your resume as well; and the start-up costs are low.

After giving up on large company world, I have started doing some short contracting IT and hopefully photography/video gigs. I do a lot of trolling on Craigslist and since I am in a not so big state, I sweep the states surrounding me. Some stuff has come to me word of mouth. I also spent a few minutes with Photoshop and a card maker program and produce my own business cards. For the longest time I collected other cards to see how other people did theirs. I kept good ones and some bad ones.

I guess it's only me that finds the irony in a marketing major that can't even market him/herself to a burger joint or Walmart. Leave the smiley faces off of the end of sentences in your applications.

If you're looking for a business to get into, make sure it is something you love ... that way you'll never spend a day working.

You don't seem to have a product developed yet.

First, remember that no matter what happens from here on in, YOU are the product you are selling. What are your benefits? Why should people hire you? Find YOUR selling points, and it will all fall into place.

Good luck!
