I think this is a view looking down and the structure is incomplete. Normally, the port-hole is on the side slab facing east.

My grandmother had something that looked much like that in a little house out behind her farmhouse. I don’t recall that it faced east, but it had a religious cult symbol of a crescent moon cut out above the door.

Of course, as a boy, I had no idea it had Mediterranean roots.
