Normans are the descendants of Norsemen, or in other words, Vikings. They conquered the northern part of France, and gave that area their name.

Go to Normandy today and you will see place names that owe very little to the french language. Every modern European country is made up of many sub-countries which still maintain their independant ways. It's a bit like fractals - when you think you have understood it, you find there are more layers within layers within layers.
