The saddles are always wrong and the horses are too large, well fed and groomed. And the dialog is usually way too modern, with some notable exceptions like True Grit and Lonesome Dove.

When I was a kid I knew the man that made saddles for “The Cisco Kid”. They looked something like Liberace would have for his horse. I know that a couple of the saddles were for show, but even the ones for movie props looked somewhat gay.

I don’t mind the horses being large and well-groomed. I mind them clearly being AQHA registered Quarter Horses. Or, worse, in movies about English history, having Andalusians. Mel Brook was riding around on an Andalusian or Lusitano—magnificent horses respectively from of Spain and Portugal—in 1300s Scotland. Uh, no.
