Continuing our retrospective on the 30th anniversary of Star Trek The Motion Picture, TrekWeb presents excerpts of a rare interview with the late actress and former Miss India Persis Khambatta, who played Deltan navigator Lt. Ilia in the 1979 Star Trek movie directed by Robert Wise.
The interview was published in the now cancelled Star Trek Communicator magazine, issue Issue 120. (Dec 1998/Jan 1999) and it is presented here as part of our "Archives Interviews" series of articles.
Here are excerpts of the last interview with Ms Khambatta, who died on August 18 1998 at the age of 49 from a massive heart attack.

I had no idea she died.
Nor did I.. A shame..
She was the last good female role in the Trek movies that I can think of. Was that the “Veega” one? Lame movie but she was good in it. RIP.
That was the V’Ger one.. I agree it was a lame movie, but she was good...
May God bless those who loved her with comfort and peace.
Vjer.. she was the Deltan navigator.
I thought she died of cancer.
Right V’ger my bad.
I just did an wiki search on her.. Her ex boyfriend thinks may have died of foul play..
Personal life
Khambatta dated Sylvester Stallone, Henry Kissinger, Ted Kennedy, Rutger Hauer and Edward Lozzi at various times.
She also had a relationship with Kabir Bedi.[5]
[edit] Death
In 1998, Khambatta was taken to the Marine Hospital in south Mumbai complaining of chest pains. She died that Wednesday of a heart attack. Her funeral was held in Mumbai, 19 August 1998. She was 49. However, not all have accepted Persis Khambatta's death as being from natural causes. Edward Lozzi, the Beverly Hills public relations executive and a former boyfriend of Khambatta in 1985-86, sent a letter of concern to the authorities in India about the threats to her life he witnessed in the United States from political fanatics in India. Khambatta had been a strong supporter of Indira Gandhi and even campaigned for her before her assassination. Lozzi hired a private investigator in Bombay (now Mumbai) to investigate the autopsy, the body, the death certificate and to interview the hospital officials where she supposedly died. None of this was made public to anyone except that her body was cremated. Lozzi's media company shortly thereafter sent out a press release announcing his fears that Persis Khambatta's death was due to foul play. [2]
Warmed over Nomad plot.
I remember she did a Sylvester Stallone movie sometime after Star Trek, and then I never saw her again.
.
LOL!
Very different potlatch!
I was surprised to learn she was from India. I had always thought she was Iranian, I guess because Persis sounds like Persian.
I think she was a Zoroastrian..
Thanks, I think! LOL
Found the photo long ago and put in the spaceships fighting.
