Some small facts.
1. At the time of ratification as many as six of the 13 original states had a “Christian” state religion.
2. Jefferson’s “wall of separation” metaphor was intended to insure that there was no federal (national) religion.
3. Until the doctrine of selective incorporation was judicially created through the 14th Amendment, the Bill of Rights did NOT apply to the individual states.

"I HAVE SWORN UPON THE ALTAR OF GOD ETERNAL HOSTILITY TO EVERY FORM OF TYRANNY OVER THE MIND OF MAN"
--Thomas Jefferson
No indulgences for sale by the state --- And leave the vestigial Roman Empire's devices for infernal torture (for the benefit and "salvation" of the damned of course) at the door... because in this Republic - THEY are illegal; and not the individual's pursuit of THEIR OWN, INDIVIDUAL relationship with their Creator... just as He intended.

It is Christ that frees us; not a bunch of state-sanctioned eunuchs who infest a religious hierarchy - who burn witches and torture individuals to death "for their own good".
