I don't think they were issuing SS numbers at birth when he was born in the early 60’s. In those days you applied for it when you went to work. It wasn't until later they started issuing one when you were born.

I DO know that for kids born in the 80's - you as parents had to apply for SS#s to place them on your tax returns. Numbers weren't automatically assigned even in the 80's - you had to APPLY for them...

As I recall, when our kids were young, early 60’s, you didn't need a SS# to file your income tax. They just took your word for it that you had the number you claimed, subject of course to some sort of validation if requested.
