The Justinian Code is the basis of the codes of the non-Common Law European countries. This should be an important artifact in understanding its development.

Western Law becomes further divided.
USA law is derived from English Common Law, which is NOT the same as French, Italian, etc.
English Common Law also includes compoments from ancient germanic and norse codes of behavior.
