Of course if we were not spending so much money on welfare checks, we could invest in space. But of course the welfare will never, ever be cut. Not one dime of it.
That is precisesly why government will never allow us a chance to direct our taxes to programs of our choice. Welfare would never survive a survival of the fittest contest with programs that have actual advantages.
Personally I suspect people would complain much less about high taxes if we weren't forced to support so many things we disagree with.

Why not have a government and central bank that favors full employment and economic growth? There would be less need for welfare, and plenty of money for programs such as NASA.
