Just got my Territorial seed company catalog and was making up my wish list....
I can’t wait. It’s hard to believe that Jan is almost over, though. It sure seems to have flown by and I’m expecting Feb to do the same as we have a lot of activity in our lives to tick off.
How many Okra plants did you have? I planted 8-10 and was buried with okra.
Do they have DrPhil plants?
No kidding. Rough way to go, but anyone who drives a truck onto ice, well......

ADDED TO THE WEEKLY GARDENING PING LIST
YOU HAVE
ADDED TO THE WEEKLY GARDENING PING LIST
I’m only going to plant a few things in the ground because we are trying to sell our house. I’ll have a lot more containers this year so I can take them with me. Is that mean? :0) I’ll put in just enough to show them the potential of the garden area but I don’t want to leave it all behind.
First Wife and I were talking to her ex-sister in law this morning and they have a place in Fieldbrook Ca with 880 semi dwarf apple trees planted 8 X 10 and pruned to about 7 foot on 2.5 acres. They sell on the farm, at the Farmers Markets around Humboldt Bay and last year they experimented with U-Pick. Their trees produced lots of beautiful large apples of about 40 varieties. They are done pruning and are getting their snowmobiles ready for a couple of months of R&R at their mountain cabin...
There is a U-Pick blueberry farm about 15 miles up the road from me. I plan on visiting them this year.
The first week I caught the weekly gardening thread, it included included this link to Hiram's potato method. I think it's what you're looking for.
I have also heard of using landscape cloth and sowing sacks about 18" across and 2 or 3 feet tall. Plant the potato into the soil as usual, but when it sprouts, poke a hole in the bottom of the sack and thread the sprout into the sack. Lay the sack as flat around the potato sprout as you can. As the potato grows, fill the sack with compost and unroll the sides to contain the mix until it is completely full.
I've never used either method, but I'm going to try one or the other this spring.
I freeze enough blueberries and strawberries to last year round...people should eat blueberries on a daily basis, if possible. Look for ‘blue rays’...fat and juicy; size of marbles; much easier to fill your bucket.
The ‘Smart Pots’ website has a piece on growing taters in containers...of course; they want you to use their product, but you can incorporate their methods with your own designs...
It was my first attempt. I had 2, because I had heard that, like squash, I would have more than I can handle...
Lost a lot of snowmobile operators with the same level of 'common sense' around the northeast this season...hasn't been terribly cold, so far. Not one below zero reading to date except for far northern Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire.
Especially a DUMP truck full of boulders and then to drop them on the ice. Craaaaaaak
Hey! Raining here...AGAIN! At least it’s warmer and we didn’t get the 20” some of our more southern neighbors got. Still...awash. Please don’t send any more rain this way! LOL
We got the greenhouse recovered and started cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, chard, pak choi, spinach, etc. Late for us, I know, but it’s been too cold and it’s still too wet. Looks like it’s going to be a cold, wet spring. Got our onion sets in and most of our seeds. No taters yet but they should be in soon. Already had some of the old guys fussing cause we don’t have any plants ready yet. Not sure what they think they’re going to do with them.... LOL
Will start maters and peppers and some flowers/herbs in the next week or so. And hanging baskets and... Roses will be in about mid Feb. Rest time is over for me! For the next 5 months or so, it’s all uphill from here!
Thank you. I’ve saved the instructions to my Garden folder on my desktop. Also the reference to the “Smart Pots” website. I remember that someone else suggested the “Lasagna Method”. I’m going to try one of them.
Okra produces quite abit. You’ll need more that 2 plants.
Good grief!
Going out on the ice in a heavy dump truck full of boulders - death wish on steriods - and he ‘won’
The seeds I’ve ordered have started coming in. Yesterday I got a package from Baker Creek, according to the invoice it was packed on my birthday!
I think it shows how excited I am about the garden this year, I kept picking up the package of seeds and shaking it just to hear them rattle :p
