Was 2008 the death of open GOP primaries? (personal rant)

I certainly hope so. I mean, how insane is it to allow your opponent to help pick the person they'd like their candidate to run against? It's been said that without the crossover votes in open GOP primaries, John McCain would not have won the Republican nomination. If one looks at things objectively, McCain would probably come in no better than third among all the 2008 GOP candidates in both popularity and the ability to defeat Obama or Hillary.
