They must be forgetting that most Americans would vote for a “Tea Party” over both the Democrats and Republicans. Calling someone a “teabagger” therefore gives them more votes.

This must be an attempt to energize their base. They won't change any minds with such an insider attack. They do run the risk of energizing the opposition as well, but they appear to be pretty well energized already.

Some Massachusetts voters may even know that the original tea party was in Boston Harbor in 1773. (I don’t know if they learn about that in public schools.)
