Animal cruelty is and should be a punishable crime.

Human civilization requires it.

Even ancient civilizations required humans to refrain from cruelty to animals.

They may be property but they are property that feel pain and fear. They are not chairs or desks that can feel no pain and have no consciousness.

And it is also true that people who commit torture to animals very often are abusive and cruel to humans.

Our government was created to protect humans and their property. That is supposed to be the limit of government. Animals are protected within the area of “property” as are our cars and other possessions. You can’t key someone elses car, but it is not about the car. It is about damaging someone elses property. That is the limit and purpose of government.

It doesn’t protect plants either for the same reason.
