There is great wisdom in carrying pistol caliber carbines/rifles that will digest your handgun ammo.
One that I personally like is the Marlin Model 1894 in .44 magnum. A Ruger Alaskan .44 backs it up quite nicely.
I toyed with the idea of a derringer in .45-70, than thought firearms that cause pain to the fire-ee are counter productive.
