My dad is a ham radio operator. He’s been doing that since I was a kid. (He still is impressed that I learned the phonetic alphabet just by listening to his and his buddies’ call numbers.) He always does the marathons and parades around the Pittsburgh area, too.
We cover a lot of things on this list. Most of these hobbies just don’t go out of style. They are skills and qualities that are more valuable than people realize.
My late husband was a two way radio field tech for 35 years, so I have a good grounding in the rules and regs, it is just not something I'm excited about.
People tend to forget that things like Ham Radio is a hobby, just like quilting and it is done by people from all professions and they use their hobby to help their communities in many different ways. There are 2 clubs in the Memphis area and they are both active in community involvement especially the Boy Scouts and the jamboree they hold each year. St. Jude is their big event it takes over 40 Ham operators to man the stations along the 26 mile route, they call for the ambulance or just a ride if a runner is injured or can't continue.
