I do model rocketry, from the minis to the E-powered guys. A rocket group called Tripoli does stuff that can go two miles high and is 8 feet tall. It's branched out to photography & video from atop the rocket, as well as an atmosphere sampler that's in the works. The possibilities are endless.

Only 2 miles? hehehhe.
Our monthly FAA waiver is 17K feet. The big launches go 50K or more. Locally, biggest rocket I’ve seen launched was 24 feet tall and over 300 lb.
I sure miss doing that stuff, but I just can’t afford it these days. Tripoli is a growing deal again, since they won that suit against ATFE. Don’t need the Low Explosives permit for H and up motors anymore.

A friend of mine introduced me to the wonders of high-powered model rocketry - it truly is amazing. Lots of R/C guidance possibilities now exist, as well as telemetry downlinks and such. The *really* manly part, though, is the DIY rocket engines. My friend has a large steel-plate blast deflector and numerous tamping tools and elongated mandrels that form the engine nozzle and the core-burning propellent grain. He's a member of the Pyrotechnics Guild (how is *that* for an upgrade to one's Man Card?); and is thus able to buy the propellant ingredients.
It's like ammo reloading on steroids.
