One of Hollywood's most enduring relationships has ended – Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins have broken up after more than two decades together, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.

"Actress Susan Sarandon and her partner of 23 years, actor Tim Robbins have announced that they separated over the summer," her rep Teal Cannaday tells PEOPLE in a statement. "No further comments will be made."

I actually met Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandan once in a social setting.

Sarandan was a nasty, sullen, arrogant piece of work. Robbins was amiable and very pleasant. We had an enjoyable conversation about a small but extremely interesting movie he made: “Jabob’s Ladder.” They seemed completely mismatched as a couple.

Their politics totally suck, in addition.

On Tuesday, Sarandon was accompanied by her dog, Penny, as she appeared on “The View” and Penny and another, unnamed dog as she visited “The Late Show With David Letterman.”

But when asked about Tim on “The View” by Joy Behar, Sarandon avoided announcing their split.

“Who gives better gifts, you or Tim?” Behar asked.

“Oh everybody gives really good gifts in our family,” Sarandon replied. “I like… I used to like to make stuff all the time and I haven’t been able to do that lately though.”
