It was the year before I graduated from high school and this broadcast along with Apollo 11 the following summer inspired me and many more to become involved in aerospace engineering.
That was an awesome time. A time when we never said, as a country, anything was impossible. It was a time when the phrase "Yes we can" was more that a hollow political jingle.
I was a junior in college, and I remember listening and watching live video of the lunar surface passing beneath them ... I was going to say "unless I'm dreaming", and in fact I did remember it wrong. I was remembering the straight down views from the low passes they did for landing and rendezvous with the LM. Thanks to
youtube ( there's a couple of these ) I can see that this was a higher orbit with a long view of the Tranquility Sea, according to the astronauts just prior to the reading.
But, ah yes, I remember it well.
