Why is Twilight popular exactly?

I asked a young lady this question back in August, she was 17, (now the Winger song has just entered my head LOL!) when I was in Borders shopping (for James Bond novels - btw I will start "The Devil May Care" tonight). She told me it was well written and romantic. My sister doesn't mind her 13 y.o. daughter (my niece) is interested in it because she is reading and there is no sex in it. She allowed her to see the movie at midnight with her friends but she had to go school the next day.

yes, it’s appeal is it’s romantic. that’s why my daughters enjoyed the books and movie. Edward is devastatingly handsome, rich, smart and loves Bella more than life itself, and NEVER pressures her for sex. he just loves watching her sleep! Bella is awkward, clumsy and plain, yet he thinks she is the most gorgeous, delectable person on the planet. it’s fantasy, pure and simple and an attractive one.
