That can't be right, I was getting smokes out of machines in 1975 for 35 cents. Not that I'm doubting your fathers wise move to save his health and money. Just that your numbers are a little off.

No, you are right. I cannot change posts so I just let it go. It was less than a half dollar per pack, but he called it a “half a dollar a day”. I am not positive (I was in fourth grade at the time) but I believe it was because he smoked more than a pack a day and was just putting 50 cents in per day as an approximation.
I AM positive that he paid less than 50 cents a pack.
