What is the deal with Glenn Beck?

Posted on 11/17/2009 6:02:50 AM PST by 7thson

I had an interesting discussion with my wife the other night. We were both curiouis as to why radio talk show people such as Limbaugh, Levin, Hannity, do not promote or talk about Glenn Beck.

I went to their various web sites and checked out what they recommend to read. It was interesting.

Limbaugh - no Beck books.

Levin - no Beck books.

Hannity - no Beck books.

Coulter - no Beck books.

Ingraham - one Beck book.

My wife and I came to the conclusion that the reason he is being shunned by the powers that be is due to his aligning himself with O'Reilly. I also think that maybe they are cautious. Is Beck really a conservative or is he just doing what he is doing to make a buck and a name.

I know Limbaugh talked with him once on Beck's program - via phone - and Levin lambasted him for his stance on McCain. Other than that, they do not seem to want to associate with him.

I would be curious as to what other Freeper's think.

I do like and listen to Rush on occasion, but I wonder why he emphasizes words like “isss-you” (issue) and others when a) nobody pronounces them like that, b) he is using the wrong pronunciation, and c) he sounds like a self-important blowhard when using that patronizing tone.

Many of his alternative-to-typical pronunciations can be found in the way the late Peter Jennings spoke, his accent, Rush was poking fun at it. He does it with many other public figures (figgers, according to Jennings). It's not an affectation unto himself -- again, longer listening would let you know that you are misinterpreting.

I like Prager too as he is Christian and makes that known. It’s entertaining seeing him debating against a Bob Beckel on Hannity. I wonder if there is a special place in Hell for the likes of a Bob Beckel? There doesn’t seem to be any redeeming value to that man, yet Hannity continues to have him on it seems at least twice a week.

>> I never hear any of then mention Boortz <<

I once heard Rush refer to Boortz as something like "my old friend."

And I think I once heard Boortz refer to Rush as something like my ex-in-law.

Anybody know what the latter was about?

Beck is taking a lot of the stuff mentioned first by Levin and then by others and expanding on it - drawing diagrams, putting faces to names, etc.

Good....The truth needs to be repeated over and over and over and over.....I don't care who said it first...just SAY IT!

How come nobody mentions the Todd Schnitt show?

No Schnitt! Schnitt has taken what ought to be a limited IQ morning drive show and just kicked the hell out of it. He's great old-time radio ... a DJ with your conservative opinions.

His dumb attempts at political correctness are hilarious. Once a week, he's fine.

Then ‘sshedule’ must irk you even more, lol.

I agree about what seems the whole nation using apostrophes for plural nouns: infuriating.

I’ll admit I never listen to the entire 3 hour program and I can’t say I’ve listened to him regularly over the course of his career. Seems like a long time for a running gag about Peter Jennings though...

Yes, “sshedule” is another one. So all of these misinterpretations is really just a mocking of Peter Jennings? I do remember Peter Jennings but can vaguelly remember his voice. Did he come to work drunk often?

Well, no.

Prager actually is a very devout Jew, raised in the Orthodox tradition.

But he always makes it abundantly clear that has the deepest respect for Christians and Christianity.

I agree I wouldn’t want to listen to him more than once in a while as he seems more radio DJ than conservative pundit. I guess his morning show is what got him his own radio talk show in 2001 post 9/11. Weird thst he still does both, and could be a reason why nobody would take him very seriously.

“I apologize if it came across I was tearing Beck down. That was not my intention.”

No apologies needed. I didn't think you were tearing him down. My words go out to those who tear any of the radio host down, be they listeners or other host. We all have our own favorites we like to listen to, and others who we just don't get excited about. We even have some great local host who are more talented than some of the national host.

I'm not a big Beck fan, but its not because of his recent show. Its because of his radio show back in 2008, when he was night after night warning us that school buses were being targeted by Muslim terrorist and he had parents in a state of hysteria. As a father of an 7-year old, I was one of them. And it was all based on Internet rumors that were debunked. There was no plot. No buses were missing. Just a rookie radio host caught up in the excitement of a urban legend. I do still listen from time to time and his show has matured some, and I am thrilled he has captured a new audience not touched by the other host, but I'm not going to join others and rip the guy ether. The only one I will rip is Savage, I can't stand the guy.

Actually you are correct, I always forget he is a Jew as he comes across as Christian on radio and I always hear him talking about Christian issues and he doesn’t seem “Jewish” if that makes sense.

>> Did [Jennings] come to work drunk often? <<

Maybe yes, maybe no.

But in any event, I believe Rush was just mocking Jennings’s very “proper” Canadian accent — an accent that no doubt was intensified (1) by Jennings’s over-compensation for his lack of a university education and (2) by Jennings’s having worked in England.

Not so. Beck predicted the collapse for a couple of years before it happened. He warned of dark times and a chill wind coming. He sounded like a lunatic. He was RIGHT. Once it happened he realized that our worst enemy was the enemy within, and he has organized opposition that seems to have stalled “healthcare”. He still sounds a bit wild-eyed, but that’s ok. When everything is fine with Glenn, he tends to get a bit of a motivational speaker kind of schtick going. It’s ok, but not very compelling. Glenn is best at being a sick freak, and remember - just because most conspiracy theories are wild it doesn’t mean conspiracies don’t exist.

Don’t read too much into it. He always sounds so angry. I’m glad he’s doing what he’d doing and I’m glad that people are following him. I just don’t relate to his personality.

Sure, Prager clearly doesn’t fit the liberal stereotype that seems to characterize most Jews in the media.

For those who don’t know, “holdonnow” is Mark Levin, so anything he says should be considered in that light.

Well after reading he was raise orthodox Jewish it even seems more surprising. Michael Medved looks and sounds Jewish, Dennis Prager I guess doesn’t fit the stereotypical image as an Israeli-Jew I guess.
