Heads up: if you’re not ready for a gov’t sanctioned marriage, don’t do it.
Dude - a church wedding on top of being gov’t sanctioned is a more complete committment. Sounds like the committment is your real issue.
I am surprised at two things as I read this. First, that people on a conservative forum WANT as much givernment in their lives as possible and second, that it took this long for anyone to bring up “comittment” issues. We probably won’t agree on much but you seem like a thoughtful person and I am glad to hear your opinion.
Have a great weekend.

I guess I haven't questioned what you call "gov't sanctioned marriage" much. I look at a legal marriage as tradition that brings order to the family structure. This country was founded on morally religious principles. The concept of a man and woman being the foundation of the family is an old one. Having a marriage legalized confers society's recognition (blessing, if you will) that they are the head of their future family with certain rights, privileges, and obligations based on that union.
Because my mama and papa were legally married, the state recognized what was his was hers and vice-versa. Property rights are clearly defined by their union. On top of that, paternity rights of their children are a given. The flip side of the "rights" that are granted, are the obligations required.
I guess I don't look at legalizing the marriage as a burden or intrusion of government, rather a recognition by society of a family structure that has worked for centuries.
Good luck with your search in this area, and have a great weekend, yourself.
