Get Your Geek On: The Women of Middle Earth
[ Via: CSPAN ] Christine ODonnell, communications director at the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, led a discussion on the depiction of women in J.R.R. Tolkiens Lord of the Rings trilogy. The discussion focused on Bradley Birzers book, J.R.R. Tolkiens Sanctifying Myth, published by ISI Books. According to Birzers analysis, the religious spirituality informing Tolkiens books was specifically Roman Catholic. In addition, he suggests that the female characters Galadriel and Elbereth were designed to exemplify traits of the Virgin Mary. Jenna Murry joined Ms. ODonnell in deconstructing the symbolic roles of the women of Tolkiens Middle Earth. . . . Not just geeky super geeky. UPDATE: I missed this the first time. Its Christine ODonnell, Senate candidate. GP
