Yes, Happy Thanksgiving to all here! Hope you have good weather for traveling if you have to travel, or have loved ones who will be...
Gonna be nice here... i.e. “just” raining. :~) No traditional thanksgiving wind storm knocking the power out while the turkey’s half done. :~)
Happy Thanksgiving to One and All OB & LSA
And to you as well, Corin. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Happy Turkey Day!
MMmmmmm.....turkey.....
That’s a great tool. I’ve always kept a glass breaker of some sort in my cars.
There’s a new development, though, and I think it’s worth alerting people in case they don’t already know: Some new cars are coming equipped with driver/passenger side windows that are laminated safety glass instead of the usual tempered glass. I became aware of this only after taking a rock into my passenger window on the Commander while on the freeway, about a month after I bought it. Somehow a big baseball-sized rock came out from between a nearby truck’s tires, ricocheted off of something and came at me sideways across a couple lanes. At first I thought I was being shot at... but that’s another story. I then saw the rock bouncing away into some other unsuspecting victim.
The window didn’t shatter and blow out like a tempered glass window would. I was surprised to find that both front side windows are in fact laminated safety glass— like windshields are made of. It stayed in place with a big starburst crack in the middle. This made it significantly more expensive to replace, but that too is another story.
The takeaway from that is the knowledge that I can’t shatter a front side window to get out. The rear passenger windows, however, are tempered, and would shatter. I don’t really know why they’re doing this. It’s a little curious.
It’s worth keeping in mind too... that electric windows usually *will* still work underwater. It’s always worth a try.
Very Interesting Ramius, thanks for the tip. We’ve got the hammer version of a safety tool.
Congrats Corin.
We’ve got Jackson Silver for the Holidays. He’s been out a couple times but he has informed us that he is cold and does prefer the basement to either of the porches.
Well there ya go!
I can think of a couple of reasons. With all the airbags in a modern car, if they all go off, there's the chance of blowing out windows. Second, laminated side windows provide extra protection against rocks, and punks with crowbars. The ideal accessory, to quote The Right Stuff is "explosive bolts".
Since we won't get that, an upgrade to a new fireman's tool might be a good compromise. It's the Channellock 6-N-1 Rescue Tool. It's about twice the size of regular heavy-duty pliers, and can smash, grab, pry, cut, and twist.
I'm not sure how heavy the plastic laminate is in side windows. If you can break through it, you might be able to use these pliers to remove it in big chunks.
heh-yep.

I would add to my prior post that rolling down the window, either manual or electric, is still only an option either before the window is underwater, or after the pressure has equalized (which means *all* of the air is out of the car) which can be a long time. The pressure on the window will keep it from rolling down. Neither the crank or a motor can overcome the pressure and slide. Mythbusters did a great episode on this, and it was crystal clear. But after the pressure equalizes (if you can hold your breath that long) it’ll open. But then you can also just open the door. So... there’s that.
The glass-breaker can be used any time though. Now I know that the best place for my glass-breaker is in the pocket behind the driver’s seat in the Commander. I know now that I have to hustle into the back seat, take a big gulp of air, and pop the glass in the rear side window, then get out.
I wonder about the convertible top in the Mustang? A knife could cut through it easy enough, but it seems that the instant temptation would be to just unlock it and push it back.
I couldn’t... eat... another bite...
Slowing down in my old age....two slices of pie and I’m done.
