In the South in the early 19th century, dueling was a test of manhood. Plenty of students at UVA died in this madness over petty insults. You had to practice both sword and pistol, because the challenged got to choose the weapon.

The Germans used to duel but didn’t kill unless it was a really bad grudge thing. Instead they tried to put a scar on the others persons face. They used Sabers and it was considered a badge of honor to have at least one Saber scar to show the women how brave you were(I bet a lot of eyes were lost).
