Goblin - the name - is of French origin I am pretty sure. The gnome on the other hand is a name of Greek origin.

You are correct also that these wee people do not fall into any religious category in the sense that they were not worshipped by pur pagan ancestors but viewed as if another species like their version of bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster or the unicorn. So I think you don't violate any theological taboos of your religion in believing in these creatures.
