They have demonstrated that they consider themselves to be and can INCREASINGLY successfully act above and beyond the law for at least 100 years.
I know I am not going to live for ever but if it came down to a choice of me bankrupting me and mine for a few months of Life, I would choose to croak. But only IF I did the choosing.
