A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon it adds up to real money. - Senator Everett Dirksen

There are approximately 836,000 law enforcement officers in the United States (Dept. of Justice). There are approximately 1.4 million active duty military personnel. The FBI estimates the number of privately-held firearms in the United States at 200 million. That's why "your gun versus an army" is not a particularly plausible case.

Huh? I think you just made this gentleman’s case, or did I misunderstand you?

There's reason to believe that number is closer to 350 million.

I would bet that was before November 2008. In the year or a bit more following that, Americans bought enough firearms to equip both the Chinese and Indian armies, the two largest in the world. Sure many of those were handguns, some where .22 plinkers.. but many were not. They were AR-15s, high powered rifles, most with scopes, and a few were .50 caliber rifles. Ammunition sales are still backlogged, at least for the more popular calibers, and some less popular ones. (Anyone know where I can get some .45 Colt without waiting months for it? :) )

I hate to tell you how long I to wait for my AR *Kit* to arrive. The receiver was the easy part. :)

Do you know how many LEO and military would side against the government depending on the circumstances? The ones that would wish to turn LEO and/or military against the citizens don’t know the answer to that question either. That alone will give anyone planning such a thing a reason to pause.

The military is not a bunch of programmed robots, they are just like the non-military, for every issue there will be those that agree and those that don’t. Each one of them has a line that they will draw in the sand, that line is different from person to person just as it is for civilians. If our leadership attempts to use the military against citizens some will follow the leadership and do whatever they are asked to do. Some will leave the miltary and fight for the civilians. Some will figure out how to get some of the weapons and other supplies to the civilians as well. No one can possibly know how many will do what unless/until we reach that point. The not knowing how many will do what is a big problem for anyone wanting to use the military against citizens.
