I agree. Who can tell a real from a fake with only scans of a document?

Anyone.

One can't verify authenticity, but a fake can be discerned. A wrong border, never used on a genuine document, obvious anachronisms, use of fonts that didn't exist, lines going straight over folds made after the document was allegedly printed, etc.
