I built a car that was 4 steel wires attached to drilled out tubes holding ball bearings, with a bracket holding a 36D rewind geared extra tall and a skinny little lexan Lotus body. It didn’t stat on the track very well, but it had the highest top end of any slot car at the track. That was about 1969 or so...

That’s about the same time as our track; we had a few “home builts” and “modifieds” as well. I was only 8 or 9 so my dad (ME Purdue University 1951) did most of the work but my older brother did his share, too.
