Fiction, but the books by Bob Judd are a good read, if you can find them.

read it last summer...the description of the Gordon Smiley accident is gruesome...you can youtube the accident in which they go frame by frame and you can see his helmetless head halfway out of the cockpit as the car is climbing the fence...

The newest James Bond novel, “Trigger Mortis” is set in the in the past.
Bond is assigned to protect the F1 British favorite from assassination during the Nürburgring race by a Russian Smersh killer. Bond ends up being trained to drive a Maserati entry. Not a bad description of the race action in the manner of Ian Fleming.
