I thought about drying it out in the oven, pulverizing it so it would compress, then storing it that way.<<<

I would think the heat would kill the vitamins, etc and speed up the oils deterioration.

Better to bake them cookies for cats and bake them dry enough that they will eat them, if they must have dry food.

In the wild, they eat meat and grasses, no dry foods that I can think of.

You can store the grains, even dehydrated butters and margarine, dried milk, and other goodies, such as a nutritional yeast.....I used to give mine yeast pills.

My TT got out the door, when I was feeding the feral cats and they have run him off.

5 days and not a sign of him.

He always slept all morning, so I didn’t miss him for hours.

Purr Baby is so scared that I will put her out, that she spends 24 hours a day touching me, so I will know how special she is.

High Target Areas: A Short Explanation

High target sites for terrorism are those high profile places that the most physical and psychological damage can be done using the least amount of destructive energy. Using a few pounds of explosive to destroy a roadway in the desert and hardly a soul will know, nor will it attain any media attention. Our lives will not feel threatened nor will we alter our lifestyles. Take that same amount of explosive to destroy a railway bridge, which may go unnoticed until a train crashes killing many people, and the media will descend on the site like locusts, developing wild stories when they drag in “would-be experts” and create confusion and fear among the public. In doing so, it will strip away some of our inner feelings of security. The more media attention an event gets, the more fear will be induced and encourage additional terrorist actions by either the original group or by “copycat” people, who use the opportunity as a means of becoming noticed and usually are not part of any “cause”.

High target sites may include, but are not limited to:

Any military base or installation

Major bridges and tunnels linking larger cities (such as The Golden Gate Bridge or The Lincoln Tunnel) IF THERE IS A “NEXT TARGET”, IT WILL PROBABLY BE ONE OF THESE SINCE “CAR BOMBS” ARE CHEAP YET EFFECTIVE.

Any utility plant, especially electrical with interconnections to inter-state power grids (since we always equate darkness with fear)

Public water supplies

Any type of chemical plant or any manufacturing plant that uses large amounts of chemicals such as a fertilizer company

Any Federal Government building

Any tall structures (such as the “Space Needle” in Seattle)

National and State Monuments (such as The Statue Of Liberty, The Washington Monument or The Alamo)

Professional sports stadiums (such as Yankee Stadium)

Large “national type” amusement parks or zoos (such as Disney World or Sea World)

Major transportation hubs (such as Grand Central Station)

Major Airports

Toxic Waste Handling Plants and Containment Areas

Nuclear power plants and processing facilities (within 50 miles)

Transcontinental Railway lines

Any jetliner flight

Down river from any dam

Any subway system (underground systems for their sheer terror potential)

Any vacation-type cruise ship

Terrorists wish to instill as much fear as possible. By damaging those things we hold as symbols of our country and our way of life they hope to shatter our ideals, dreams and security. There are sites in every state that they’d wish to destroy, not so much for the loss of life, but for the loss of our dignity and faith in who we are. Here, in Texas, one of the most venerated places is the Alamo in San Antonio. It represents our resolve in the face of insurmountable odds. The Alamo stands as a monument as revered in Texas as the Statue Of Liberty is to most of America. If either were destroyed, or even seriously damaged by a terrorist attack, it could cripple our spirit. There are many such high target places in our country that even though they can be rebuilt they can never be replaced. There are many people charged with the security of these places and they have our respect for the work they do. You can help them by being observant to anyone who exhibits strange behavior. If you see someone acting odd, do not turn and walk away. Be part of that great caring that is America and report anything you see or hear to the proper authorities. This also holds true when you are on vacation. What greater damage to the spirit of America than if a place such as “Disney World” were damaged by a terrorist? What fright would be created if we felt that even an amusement park wasn’t safe. To be sure, places like this have remarkable security forces that are trained in counter-terrorism, but extra sets of eyes couldn’t hurt.

Oil and gas depots, refineries, major ports, and places of commerce and industry are also high risk areas. The risk level varies depending upon if an area or building were crippled or destroyed in an attack what damage would be done to our psyche and our economy. When the World Trade Centers fell, besides the saddening loss of so many innocent lives, there was a profound effect on our economy. Most of the banks and financial institutions have learned a hard lesson and now backup their records to low-target areas. In 2001, lost records created financial shockwaves that took many months to recover. The ensuing ripple effect also meant loss of jobs and further fear.

SO WHAT SHOULD CONCERN US?

Aside from the natural threats coming from mother nature, we do need to be concerned, but not overwhelmed, about other threats, some of which can be initiated by terrorists, carelessness or just plain stupidity. Threats involving chemicals are one of these incidents that need consideration. Every day there are thousands of gallons of chemicals being transported throughout the country by rail or tanker truck. Some of these chemicals are relatively harmless in nature. There are many, however, that are extremely toxic. In most cases the liquid chemical spills which might occur during accidents can be quickly contained. It is the gaseous variety that need more attention by the public. There may be a point in time when a spill due to a tanker truck accident will release fumes or gas.

Depending upon the gas, it might either quickly raise above ground level and be quickly dissipated OR it might remain ground level as it spreads. This last type is the most dangerous as it can spread to a neighborhood and engulf it in a deadly plume. The public has been told during certain emergencies to seal all your windows and air conditioners. This may hold true when there are just irritants and particulates in the air, but since houses were built to “breathe”, it offers little protection against poison gas. (If you live out in the country you’ll agree that homes breathe if you’ve ever smelled the caustic odor of a road-killed skunk from miles away even when every window and door in your home is shut.) The best way of surviving a poison gas event is to get out of the area as fast as possible while remaining upwind of the spill. During an event like this it might be life-or-death if you fail to listen to your local news and follow the directions of local government officials. Pay special attention to what the police and fire departments have to say as they are trained in this type of spill. There are special hazardous material “HAZMAT” teams that are both equipped and trained to deal with containment. Listen to them. Do exactly what they say as you may not get a second chance. If you live in an area where there is a chemical plant, you can consider yourself in a high target area. You don’t need to become overly worried, but you need to be alert. With deliveries and shipments via trucks or rail there remains a higher risk that an accident or terrorist event might take place. With this in mind, make plans for several evacuation routes away from the plant (based upon wind direction) in the event that your family has to leave. If you are in such an area, consult with your local police and fire departments about any alert system they have in place. If there is no alert plan, get your community together by discussing the development of a plan at a town meeting. A good alert plan might be the same as those developed in areas which have a nuclear power plants. (This is another high target area. The only proper response to a problem at a nuclear power plant is to evacuate WITH your home bag.) These nuclear power plant alert systems usually involve a series of powerful signaling horns or sirens that ONLY signal in the event of a problem. An alternative alert system might involve a special series of blasts from the fire department horns. The only drawback to this second choice is that we have become acclimated to it’s sound so many might ignore it or confuse it’s signal with that of a fire call out. A re-education of the public and a few test drills would be needed. Either way, make sure your community has an alert system in place if you reside in an area that has a chemical plant. Also check to see that your fire department and police department have the proper training and plans to cope with a chemical HAZMAT emergency. If you see a chemical spill remain as far away from it as possible and report it to the proper authorities. Armed with this additional planning, you become better prepared in the event such an occurrence takes place.

Remember that a “one-point” terrorist act might also evolve into a “multidimensional event”. These are disasters that trigger or combine with weaknesses within an area that will result in a “super event”. An example of a super event that might occur is if due to a terrorist attack a plane crashes during an emergency landing at San Antonio Airport. Depending upon it’s direction and altitude, during such a crash it might clip or hit the chemical tanker cars that Union Pacific routinely has parked on it’s tracks that parallel along Wetmore Avenue and are adjacent to the airport. I have read some of the contents of these tankers... very scary. Let’s say the plane attempts a landing but crashes into these tankers releasing their contents. The plane, as it crashes, continues another 300 feet. At that point it might hit the aviation fuel stored in large tanks at the outer perimeter of the airport where other planes (delivery services, etc.) are also parked. So, in this one crash event the plane ruptures dangerous chemicals from the tanker cars, hits the volatile aviation fuel and sparks a tremendous fireball that ejects toxic fumes from the chemicals into the air. This “super event” would mean the evacuation of tens of thousands of nearby residents and businesses. Since the major wind direction in this area of Texas can change on an hourly basis, coming from the Gulf, Mexico or from the North, as a precaution the evacuation would have to cover all residences/businesses within a 360 degree area for many miles. This would also force the closings of two very major highways: Rt 410 and 281. If you are in the emergency “business”, you’d better plan for this type of thing to happen. This is why you need to make several evacuation routes from your home or business and several other places to shelter. Planning is very important. Take the time. Make plans. Discuss these plans with family members and neighbors.

continued.

The price of Healthcare Legislation...

Amazing how everyone has their price.....

AARP sold out their support for $18,176,224 According to Recovery.gov (of course they will say there is no connection)

AMA sold out for $210 Billion promise of not cutting Medicare payments to Doctors next year. (Shhh don’t talk about that yet...)

Mary Landrieu $100 Million (or according to her she isn’t that cheap of a date - $300 Million was her price - geesh came right out and said it too- even proud of it.....)

Wonder how many others were ‘bought’?

Total cost - DON’T ASK!!!!!!!

And the Gov’t commissions didn’t even wait for the vote to start rationing - Mammograms, PAP’s - just the tip of the iceburg!!!!!

Following their guidelines, I would have been a widower for the past 25 years!

Oh, no! I'm so sorry granny. I hope he'll find a path through the ferals to get home soon. Is he at the age to be looking for a mate? Perhaps that's what he's up to. give PB extra love from me, since she's an only cat now and probably misses her bud.

Public health significance of virus mutation detected in Norway
Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 briefing note 17

20 NOVEMBER 2009 | GENEVA — The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has informed WHO of a mutation detected in three H1N1 viruses. The viruses were isolated from the first two fatal cases of pandemic influenza in the country and one patient with severe illness.

Norwegian scientists have analysed samples from more than 70 patients with clinical illness and no further instances of this mutation have been detected. This finding suggests that the mutation is not widespread in the country.

Related links

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009

The virus with this mutation remains sensitive to the antiviral drugs, oseltamivir and zanamivir, and studies show that currently available pandemic vaccines confer protection.

Worldwide, laboratory monitoring of influenza viruses has detected a similar mutation in viruses from several other countries, with the earliest detection occurring in April. In addition to Norway, the mutation has been observed in Brazil, China, Japan, Mexico, Ukraine, and the US.

Although information on all these cases is incomplete, several viruses showing the same mutation were detected in fatal cases, and the mutation has also been detected in some mild cases. Worldwide, viruses from numerous fatal cases have not shown the mutation. The public health significance of this finding is thus unclear.

The mutations appear to occur sporadically and spontaneously. To date, no links between the small number of patients infected with the mutated virus have been found and the mutation does not appear to spread.

The significance of the mutation is being assessed by scientists in the WHO network of influenza laboratories. Changes in viruses at the genetic level need to be constantly monitored. However, the significance of these changes is difficult to assess. Many mutations do not alter any important features of the virus or the illness it causes. For this reason, WHO also uses clinical and epidemiological data when making risk assessments.

Although further investigation is under way, no evidence currently suggests that these mutations are leading to an unusual increase in the number of H1N1 infections or a greater number of severe or fatal cases.

Laboratories in the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network closely monitor influenza viruses worldwide and will remain vigilant for any further changes in the virus that may have public health significance.

Agris Seijo rental farm in Seijogakuenmae Japan reported by Tokyo Green

I visited Odakyu’s Agris Seijo rental farm in Seijogakuenmae in Setagaya and was
prepared to be charmed by a community vegetable farm built by a rail company above
their tracks. Three years ago, the Odakyu corporation rebuilt the station, undergrounded
the railway, and used some of the new land to promote urban farming. But I left
feeling somewhat strange that reclaimed land could be gated and restricted. Although
it is the rail company’s property, I think they missed a huge opportunity to create
a great space for the neighborhood.

Time Magazine names Valcent’s Vertical Farming Technology one of Top 50 Best Innovations
of 2009

“Real estate - the one thing we’re not making any more of,” reports Time Magazine.
“That might be good news for landlords but not for the world’s farmers, who have
finite cropland to feed a growing global population. The answer: build up by farming
vertically.

Valcent is pioneering a hydroponic-farming system that grows plants
in rotating rows, one on top of another. The rotation gives the plants the precise
amount of light and nutrients they need, while the vertical stacking enables the
use of far less water than conventional farming. But best of all, by growing upward
instead of outward, vertical farming can expand food supplies without using more
land.”

Dear Dollmaking Friends,

‘Tis the season to give thanks here in the United States. We celebrate
Thanksgiving on November 26, a time for prayer, feasts, friends and
family. In our family we always have turkey, cranberry sauce, and
pumpkin pie. This year the pumpkins didn’t do too well, and supplies
are limited. Some of the grocery stores are unable to get any canned
pumpkin. I am thankful I have a couple of cans on my shelf so I can
make some pies for next Thursday. I am grateful for the internet,
soap, clean clothes (can you tell I am doing laundry today?),
patterns, a stash, children, grandchildren, friends, family, sewing
skills, dolls, and all of you we have met through Dollmaker’s Journey.
The list goes on and on. My friend, when she tried to start her car
after a late evening church meeting and it didn’t work, was thankful
for tow truck drivers, jump starts, cell phones, mechanics, and a few
other things most of us take for granted. We live in an amazing world,
but do we take time to see the miracles around us? This November take
time to smile, cheer up someone sad, and count your many blessings.

CUSTOMER QUERIES

Q: Can you inform me where I can buy horse hair to use for dolls or
animals?

A: I have found a horse hair supplier here - http://www.hairwork.com/horse_hair_for_sale.htm
If you are looking for long, straight hair then I would recommend our
new Kidassia Goat Hair.

Q: I want to use fall leaves for doll hair. How would I do this?

A: You can coat autumn leaves with a light coat of Paverpol on both
sides and letting them dry. The leaves remain flexible and can be used
for skirts, hats, etc. I imagine that they might even work for hair if
they were very small. I have used silk leaves for fairy hair, dresses,
and even wings. I think for a doll that will last more than a season
you might want to consider fabric leaves available anywhere silk
flowers are sold, because eventually natural things such as seed pods,
acorn caps, feathers, leaves and moss disintegrate. To create tiny
leaves make a pattern and trace it onto the wrong side of a fabric
leaf - then cut it out. That is how I made the leaves on the tree of
our Autumn Dryad who is painting the leaves for fall. She is part of
our Doll for All Seasons series. You can see her by going to
http://dollmakersjourney.com Click on pick pattern category, click on
costumes, and scroll down to see the dryad. I did sprinkle tiny leaves
and other autumn floral things (like grapes) in her hair.

Q: Beth Krause wrote: I just received my Tibetan lamb’s wool in pink
today. It feels so wonderful! I was expecting/need the pink to be
more of a candy-pink. I was a bit concerned about this as it is very
hard to really get a feel for color on a computer screen. Can I dye
it using the method on your site? The directions say that it needs
to be bleached, and I am assuming this was at one point in order to
get it pink in the first place, but I don’t know if anything has been
added to it afterwards.

A: Mary Ann wrote: I really don’t know about the dyeing process used
on the plates that we buy. Why don’t you cut off a small piece and try
dyeing it. I think it will very likely work. Let us know if it works
out.

Beth responded: It worked beautifully! I’m glad I put a small piece
in the dye first... It was too dark after just a few minutes. I was
able to get a wonderful candy pink, though! Perfect color for my
doll!

NOTE: It sound as if the colored (not natural) dyed Tibetan lamb can
be re-dyed. See directions here:

about 85 recordable devices that we can mail to a group of soldiers

send back to us and we will then in turn be putting them into a doll
with the soldier’s picture on it. Do you carry anything like this?

JOINTING DOLLS THE JUDI WARD WAY (Originally in FOCD 734)
By Judi Ward with additions by Bonnie B. Lewis

This is a method I “figured out” in about 1975 and have been teaching
for years and years. It is one of those “little known facts” of
dollmaking that is a miracle once one “gets it.”

There is a video for doing it at my web site, and it is soooo easy to
do! For those who have trouble finding the strong nylon cord, I just
discovered that Gillette Flossing tape works great when done
quadrupled and also Dollmakers Journey has really strong waxed nylon
that is great!

The video is here: http://www.judisdolls.com/video.html

Go to Dollmaker’s Journey for the waxed linen cord (below the floral
tape.) The covered buttons with teeth are also there.
http://dollmakersjourney.com/supplies.html

Here are some additional tips from Judi:

I use a rather thick cord that is available for jewelry making and at
www.dollmakersjourney.com I have used it for over 30 years,
originally purchased from shoe repair shops. When you are watching
the video, look closely at my hands. My right hand never lets up the
tension on the cords, while holding the doll down with a thumb or for
some with the side of your fist. My left hand never lets up the
tension as it holds the cord tight.

Then you quickly wrap the cord in your left hand, twice around,
between the limb and the body, and it will stay tight. Do the nurses
knot (once around, twice around, pull) for the first tie, and then a
simple once around tie for the second tie. Once you get the hang of
holding the cords in both hands TIGHT while pressing on the dolls
tummy or chest with one hand you should have no trouble. It isn’t
the ties or how they are made that make the limbs loose; it is letting
up on the tension after pulling the cords as tight as you can, before
you do the tying that causes loose limbs.

If the holding tight is just impossible, then pull as tight as you can
and have someone press on the limb with the other limb against the
table and do the nurses knot, then a normal tie.

With someone pressing down, you don’t need to do the wrap between the
body and limb, and the holders hand will be in the way anyway.

For smaller dolls you can use dental floss. You can even use dental
floss for a bigger doll but use more strands. If you can find a waxed
nylon cord, that works well too. I haven’t seen it for ages though,
except very thick, which is hard to take through the bodies.

Hope this helps some. It is hard to explain on paper but once you get
it it is so simple. Just don’t let up on the tension on the cords
until you have wrapped the cord in one hand between the body and
limb!!!

You can see more of Judi’s latest designs at: http://dollmakersjourney.com/ward.html

NOTE: Ree Medina invented a way to turn bottle caps into recycled
shank buttons. It might not be for everyone, but could be helpful in
the middle of the night when you are trying to finish a doll and don’t
have the right size buttons. Here’s the post:
http://reepeas.blogspot.com/2009/11/recycled-shank-buttons.html

Also check out the tip above from Shelley Hawkey to create shank
buttons from wire and Shrink Plastic. Someone else mentioned that you
should save the inner lids on dishwashing detergent bottles. They are
round and already have a hole in the middle.

Judi also talks about her basic face painting class that is now
online. “I did a few edits, and Paul made it an E class...No
blackboard etc. It is a simple, basic, techniques class not a “Paint
just this face” class so once you have the techniques you can paint
most any face. It is for acrylics, not watercolors or oils, though the
techniques work for oils too.

The face in the class is basic, but has the “parts” for learning to
paint any face type. Shading is touched upon and can of course be
elaborated on. The key is practice and learning to hold your
paintbrush properly for fine work. I much prefer acrylic painted
faces, because they are more vivid and permanent, and I hope that
someday our dolls made today will be the Vintage, desirable,
collectible dolls of the future, hopefully with faces intact.....Once
one feels confident with the basics, more flourishes can be added,
perhaps wild, eyelids etc. but without the basics to start from, it is
easy to end up with a mess.”

NEWS FROM THE HOME FRONT

Bonnie has been inspired to create dolls for some of her
granddaughters. (She has 12, so that’s a lot of dolls.) For two of the
babies she is using the Carry Me Doll pattern by Aeb and Cindy Bigelow
from Cloth Doll Magazine 4-2. It has long skinny arms and legs and
long braids, and loves to be dragged around the house by toddlers. She
is also making Marie based on the Mary Francis books from the 1900’s
(available at lacis.com) for a granddaughter that is learning to sew,
knit, and crochet. She will get the books to make clothes to fit this
doll from her mom. Then she found 3 Holly Hobbie vinyl head and hand
sets (remember those?) that she hopes to finish for three more. She
also taught ethnic face pins at the last G Street Doll Club. (http://
dollmakersjourney.com/friends.html#Lewis) At the time she thought
about creating a white vampire face to honor New Moon that comes to
theaters tomorrow. But she couldn’t decide whether to make the irises
red or gold. Maybe this pin will be finished when Eclipse comes out
next June.

Mary Ann is counting the minutes until she sees her son Michael and
daughter-in-law Kyah in New Jersey. She’s busy as a bee preparing
goodies for the upcoming Thanksgiving Dinner/Family Baby Shower that
they will have at her sister Kathi’s home on Thursday. It has been
more than a year since the family has been all together. It will be a
blessed holiday indeed! Our fantastic assistant Tara will be holding
down the fort and keeping the orders filled for the few days Mak will
be away.

Helping Out Our Feathered Friends

Posted: 23 Nov 2009 04:15 AM PST
Silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone. ~G.B. Stern

Many of us feed the birds during the cold weather, but they also need water in the winter despite the snow around them. Always provide clean water with no additives. Place it in a shallow container that is less than 3 inches deep. You can add small pebbles to the bottom of the container to give it texture and keep the surface from getting slippery. If you have a deck or a windowsill that you can access easily in the winter, you can add fresh water daily. Consider the location of the water so it’s not accessible to cats or other predators. As with feeders, it helps to place the water about 10-12 foot from a shrub or bush.

You can buy a special heater that will warm the water and keep it from freezing. Be sure it’s a UL listed heater made for this purpose and it should be plugged into a outdoor socket. It should have a safety feature or an automatic shut off in case the water goes dry and use grounded plugs.

The sound of dripping or running water will help attract birds and a simple way to do this is to drill or punch a hole in the side of a bucket near the bottom (but not on the bottom) so the water drips into the birdbath. You can hang it from a shepherd’s hook over the birdbath.

Birdbaths can be made out of many things including trash can lids, ceramic, clay or terra cotta saucers, pie plates etc. If the surface is smooth then be sure to add a layer of pebbles or sand. Wash your birdbaths on a regular basis as they become soiled.

On OFL we have more tidbits on backyard birds:

Crazy Cake Mix in a Jar
Posted by: “violet

Crazy Cake Mix in a Jar

2 cups flour
2/3 cup cocoa powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/3 cups sugar

In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, cocoa powder & baking powder. Layer ingredients in jar in order given in a 1 quart canning jar. It is helpful to tap jar lightly on a padded surface (towel on counter) as you layer the ingredients to make all ingredients fit neatly. Use scissors to cut a 9 inch-diameter circle from fabric of your choice. Center fabric circle over lid and secure with a rubber band. Tie on a raffia or ribbon bow to cover the rubber band. Attach a card with the following directions:

Crazy Cake
3/4 cup Vegetable Oil
2 tsp. Vinegar
1 tsp. Vanilla
2 cups Water

Stir cake ingredients together using a wire whisk or fork, making certain that all ingredients are completely mixed together.

Bake at 350F for 35 minutes. Frost as desired or serve sprinkled with powdered sugar, with fresh fruit on the side.
