Glad you found your way back to us.

Yes, it was a surprise and I often think of her smiling to herself, as she sewed on it, I have forgotten the exact number of print squares she used, but 2500 or so of the colored 2 inch squares, she and Jean cut the muslin parts of it and the diamonds for joining, all tiny.

Mary loved to sew, it took all I could do to keep enough pieces cut for her to sew on...LOL, I rarely got to sew on my own machine.

But that was the joy of team work, I could cut while being with Bill, as he liked to watch tv, and she kept busy.

We went to Yuma once a month for supplies/groceries, etc and always stopped at Goodwill, hoping to find a big black garbage bag of fabric scraps for 2 or 3 dollars.

Then the next week, we had a meeting and divided the bag, she would have it all separated in like kind piles and we took turns choosing piles.

Once an old friend of hers stopped to say hello on a fabric splitting night and stayed so late her husband called to check on her, LOL, Catherine was having a ball watching us and catching up on our new patterns we had invented, for we made quilts for other people too.

Catherine had so much fun, she called and asked if she could come over on our next get together night, for she had a surprise.....LOL, she gone to Goodwill and bought a couple bags to split with us.

You can imagine how much fun is in a large bag of scraps and often including the pattern already cut out and ready to sew, many of the pieces were large enough for making clothing, lots for kids and some for adults.

I am so glad Mary got the prize for at that time she had worked about 70 years on quilts.

Check the thrift stores, ask if they have bags of fabric scraps.

BE AWARE OF THIS SCAM WHEN YOU TRAVEL....and remind your elderly parents,
grandparents, aunts, uncles, and anyone you know who travels. But
especially the older generation, as they are more likely to fall for
something like this.

Subject: HOTEL SCAM

It seems that the schemes to cheat people never stops and it
won’t! But keeping people informed is a key to helping prevent this
from happening to your friends and relatives so please forward to all of
yours.

Can’t be too careful these days!

This so simple, and reading this, anyone could be caught.

You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk. When
checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (for all the
charges for your room). You get to your room and settle in.

Someone calls the front desk and asked for (example) Room 620
(which happens to be your room). Your phone rings in your room. You
answer and the person on the other end says the following, ‘This is the
front desk. When checking in, we came cross a problem with your charge
card information. Please re-read me your credit card number and verify
the last 3 digits numbers at the reverse side of your charge card.’

Not thinking anything you might give this person your
information, since the call seems to come from the front desk. But
actually, it is a scam of someone calling from outside the hotel/front
desk. They ask for a random room number. Then, ask you for credit card
information and address information. Sounding so professional
that you do think you are talking to the front desk.

If you ever encounter this problem on your vacation, tell the
caller that you will be down at the front desk
to clear up any problems. Then, go to the front desk and ask if
there was a problem. If there was none, inform the manager of the hotel
that someone called to scam you of your credit card information acting
like a front desk employee.

This was sent by someone who has been duped......and is still
clearing up the mess....

P.S. Please everyone, help spread the word by forwarding this
email to everyone you know. Who knows, you might just help someone avoid
a nasty experience.

I am going to share your story with my quilting group. We meet the 2nd Monday of every month and always end up staying much too late. Luckily, most of us homeschool and have a little leeway as far as curfew is concerned.

I always look forward to our meetings. We call ourselves the Piecemakers. ;-)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - March 5, 2010 - Dayton, NJ - Mincing Overseas Spice Company of Dayton, New Jersey announced today that it is recalling black pepper Lots 3258 and 3309 because of possible contamination with Salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Black pepper was not distributed at retail level and was shipped to FL, IA, IL, IN, MA, OK, NJ, NY, PA, RI, TX and WI.

The black pepper was sold in 50 lb, 25 lb, and 20 lb cartons with Mincing Overseas Spice Company’s name.

Mincing has decided to initiate this voluntary recall as a commitment to the safety and health of the public.

Customers that purchased black pepper from any parts of Lots 3258 and 3309 should place these lots or any spice blends made from these lots under their control on hold and contact Mincing Overseas Spice Company at 732-355-9944. With regard to any spice blends or other foods made from these lots, companies should contact their local FDA Recall Coordinator to determine the appropriate action and if a sub recall is needed.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — March 5, 2010 - Buena Park, CA – As a precautionary measure, Fresh Food Concepts, Inc. announced, it is voluntarily recalling certain production codes of Delicioso, De la Casa, Rojo’s and Fresh Food Concepts brand Spinach Dips and Fresh Food Concepts Spinach Dip with Yogurt because an ingredient used in those products has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is a common food borne pathogen that can cause severe illnesses, including fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. While most individuals recover in three to five days without medical intervention, the infection can be life-threatening to young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Products subject to this recall that were distributed nationwide in plastic tubs and sold in the refrigerated section include:

There have been no reports of illnesses associated with the identified products, and no other varieties or types of flavors of products made by Fresh Food Concepts are affected by this recall.

The Spinach Dip products were made using Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP), manufactured by Basic Food Flavors Inc., Las Vegas, Nevada. The HVP had tested positive for Salmonella at its original manufacturing plant Basic Food Flavors Inc. Because the safety of our consumers is our top priority and out of an abundance of caution, Fresh Food Concepts has voluntarily recalled these products.

Fresh Food Concepts is working closely with the FDA to conduct this recall.

Consumers who have purchased the above affected products are urged return them to their place of purchase for a refund. Consumers with question may contact the company at (714) 562-5000 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PST. Monday through Friday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — March 05, 2010 - Rochester, NY - Ed Roller, Inc. of Rochester, NY is voluntarily recalling Wegmans Food You Feel Good About® Medium Seafood Sauce, 9 ounce glass jar, UPC #77890 84032, because the product may contain undeclared soy and anchovies. Only those jars with a sell-by date up to and including April 21 are included in this recall. The sell-by date is heat stamped on the label.

People who have allergies to soy or anchovies run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this problem.

The recalled product is packaged in a 9 oz. clear glass jar with a white screw top and was distributed to 75 Wegmans Food Markets in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.

The recall was initiated after a recent inspection by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets revealed the omission of Worcestershire sauce in the ingredient statement of this product. Worcestershire sauce is made with ingredients that include soy and anchovies. Production of this product has been temporarily suspended until corrective actions are taken.

Consumers who have purchased Wegmans 9 oz. Food You Feel Good About® Medium Seafood Sauce, , UPC #77890 84032 may return the product to Wegmans for a full refund. (”Basic”) issued a recall for all Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (”HVP”) dry powder manufactured by Basic Food Flavors on or after September 17, 2009, due to a positive test result for Salmonella in a production lot. In response to a recent post I wrote on America’s coming fiscal crisis, a
distressed reader asked, “While it is no doubt our financial well-being is
in question, do you really think we need to stockpile gold in our safes
along with medicine and ammo?”

Here’s my response...

Show me the example in history where a nation survives without a violent
revolution after adopting paper money as its only standard, ringing up
enormous foreign debts while fighting multiple wars, and relying on a tiny
fraction of its population as its revenue base. Or ... simply show me any
democracy in history that survived after more than 50 percent of its
population stopped paying taxes. Show me any economy that thrives after
raising marginal income tax rates to more than 50 percent (which is what
will happen in the U.S. if Obama’s latest health-care bill passes).

There is no doubt our country is heading toward a crisis.

We already have begun to default on our foreign debts, which are enormous -
roughly $2 trillion per year in foreign credit is currently required to meet
our funding demands. If our creditors abandon our currency (and they have
begun to do so), the resulting inflation will destroy what remains of the
middle class in America.

A perfect name......smile.

It will be fine to share our story, Mary Rohrbaugh and Catherine Brimhall are the other 2 ‘members’.

One night I had a brainstorm, we wanted a new pattern for a Lady that we had made several quilts for, she sewed her families clothes, but had no interest in quilting, so about once a year, I would get a call to come and get this huge box of scraps, and we would have enough for 2 or more quilts, of which she got one. Mary was also a doll maker, so we had uses for every inch of it, at the time I had an 8 harness loom and it will use scraps by the pound.

Back to new patterns, I described exactly how I thought we could make a block and Mary rushed in to sew it up.

LOL, it sure was not what I saw in my mind, but we liked it and called it the Mary Kathleen, for Mary and the Lady we were making it for.

We never did get the block made in my mind.

May taught me to use a 4 inch block and triangles cut to make a 4 inch block, sticking with the 2 sizes, you can cut the whole scrap up and always have them for the next quilt and then there are the patterns like the Ocean Wave, that on a huge king size, used 3500 triangles as my memory pulls the number up from 30 years ago.

We did other sizes of pattern pieces, but also played with all the patterns that come out of the blocks and triangles, combined or separate.

The Ocean Wave went to a Lady in Florida, I had a small antique and craft supply shop in Wellton and as I ordered supplies, I always enclosed a flyer that I had printed.

The Lady worked for one of my suppliers and wanted a special quilt with a lot of browns in it, we made the Ocean Wave and she loved it.

I should remember that some call what we made Comforters or tied quilts, for they were not hand sewn quilting, we tied them.

Bill cut me patterns out of the old style floor tiles, 9 inch square as I recall them. He also did one in a half tile for a brick pattern, I used it for heavy cloth, as in wool skirts and pants.

At the shop, I had quilts for sale, LOL, the men wanted the heavy wool ones, for hunting and the bunkhouses on the ranch. They also liked the ones made from old Levi’s.

Mary lived to be 85 and she sent me two new patterns she had worked out, to see which I like best, a week before she died.

I had moved up here, but still went back to Wellton for a couple days of quilting, when I could.

Enjoy it, for not many do it today.

so cool! I’ve been having issues again with a cat with food allergies. Everytime I find a food without the grains she’s allergic to, she becomes sensitised to what is in the food (now either oatmeal or barley) and can’t eat that food any more.

I’ve been looking into making food and this is perfectly timely!

How To Make Rose Wine

Rose Wine

Making your own rose wine can be a hoot. It takes a while, but like making beer, especially if you like to experiment with the recipe like I do, you never know quite what you’re going to end up with.

The nice thing about rose and dandelion wines, as well as other seasonal wines and liqueurs, is that they distill a season. In winter, when you’re shivering your way to the mailbox, you can think about the summer wine you finessed out of those long, sunny days. After you come in from the cold, it will warm you up in more ways than one.

If you have the time to spend, between pinching pennies and taking the kids to their recreational commitments, growing and processing your own foods can make for some very happy memories and a few good laughs too. You may not be up to canning your own chow-chow, but a little wine is easy to brew and always goes down well. If it isn’t a complete success, at least it will probably be drinkable, and there’s always next year to try another batch.

Rose Petal Wine

*16 Cups Rose petals (rinsed thoroughly)
1 Gallon Water
3 Orange rinds, chopped
3 ½ Pounds Sugar
5 Cloves
5 Pepper corns
1 package yeast
2 Cups Orange juice

Combine petals, orange rinds and sugar in a large pot.

Boil water in a separate container and pour over petal mixture.

Bring to a simmer for 30 minutes.

Cool to room temperature.

Add prepared yeast (Follow directions for rehydrating yeast, which may recommend dissolving in warm, not hot, water.)

Add orange juice and spices.

Cover and set aside for three weeks to a month in a dark place to ferment. (This will get fragrant.)

Strain and decant into sterilized jars. Let wine season for three months or so before serving.

*If you want to accumulate 16 cups of rose petals, try harvesting petals a little at a time and freezing them until you have enough for a batch. This is a great summer project. You can have a batch ready to serve for Christmas and New Years.

Special Note: Never use roses that have been treated with pesticides.

This recipe uses no sulfites or special equipment.

Homemade Herbed Cheese

Herbed CheeseIf you want to offer your family or guests a soft cheese that’s full of flavor and low in calories, try making cheese from yogurt. Once you’ve drained off the excess moisture, no one will know that you’re serving yogurt cheese, and with a few added herbs, it will taste great. Served with a tray crudités (fresh raw vegetables), it’ll be a big hit.

Herbed Yogurt Cheese Recipe

2 cups plain yogurt
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 tbsp minced chives
1 tsp cilantro
1 tsp parsley
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp olive oil (or to taste)
½ tsp paprika
½ tsp salt
½ tsp pepper

Place yogurt in a cheesecloth-lined sieve and suspend over a mixing bowl. Allow the yogurt to drain for two hours or more in the fridge. Squeeze out any excess moisture. Combine yogurt and other ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours. Overnight would be even better.
