Google would be a poor choice. If you think that by Googling that you’ll get an even-handed approach, you’d be mistaken. The web is full of articles that either refer to fraudulent information, or simply assume that America is too good for this sort of thing to happen.

FreeRepublic is a pretty good resource. Start with some of the links in this thread...it’ll save you time.

I like http://www.alltheweb.com/

What I find PARTICULARLY useful is in the ADVANCED search, I can search by begin and end date, TO THE EXACT DATE. That's very useful if I'm trying to nail down when and where a rumor got started.

I also find that the Yahoo cache is unedited and a good alternative. I can't necessarily say the same for Google cache.

I wish I had a good alternative to Archive.org, a/k/a The Way Back Machine. It seems more and more people are trying to erase their tracks there by requesting to be removed from the index:

Current website: http://fightthesmears.com/articles/5/birthcertificate (removed OFF the internet)
Archive.org cache: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://fightthesmears.com/articles/5/birthcertificate (removed per owner request — verified by Archive.org staff)

Current website: http://hawaii.gov/dhhl/applicants/appforms/applyhhl (changed)
Archive.org: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://hawaii.gov/dhhl/applicants/appforms/applyhhl (removed per owner request)

Current website: http://www.kapiolanigift.org/centennial.aspx?id=1728 (Obama letter removed)
on Archive.org: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.kapiolanigift.org/centennial.aspx?id=1728 (removed per owner request)

... etc ...
