138TH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP LIVE THREAD
http://www.opengolf.com ^ | 07/13/2009 | ROYAL AND ANCIENT GOLF CLUB

Posted on 07/13/2009 9:05:30 PM PDT by cleveland gop

Time for the year's 3rd major championship(already)and the only one of the 4 that is not played on this side of the Atlantic.

This year's event takes us to the west coastline of Scotland, to Royal Turnberry Golf Club where I'm sure the weather will have a lot to do with who wins and who doesn't win.

So what storyline is going to be written this time.....

Can Padraig win for the 3rd year in a row? Is Tiger going to tie his buddy Roger and win his 15th Major? Can Greg Norman turn the fountain of youth on again, but keep it on Sunday too and shock the world? Or do even bigger underdogs, like John Daly or David Duval revisit past glory? Or do stars like Paul Casey, Sergio, Ernie, Anthony Kim or others get the big prize come Sunday night?

Who do you think will hold the Claret Jug come Sunday??

Early weather forecast for the weekend, intermittent rain showers with highs in the low 60's.

Tiger tees off at 4:09AM EDT(9:09AM BST)on Thursday.

Hey now we all know you too!!!

I’m smiling from ear to ear typing this, BUT I’m not afraid to admit that I was pulling for Tom to win today. But as an earlier poster said no one could really be a loser in this cause both Tom and Stewart bring great games and sportsmanship on and off the course.

I will be at Firestone as usual for the Bridgestone event and I’ll just have to root a little harder for Stewart for sure. Again, many congratulations to the Champion Golfer of 2009 and to the family also!!!

Thanks again for everyone who remembered that while contributing to the thread!!!

even with the great up and down on 6, this thing was decided on 18.

Yeah...man so close too! Seems the wheels just flat came off after that putt....

You have a celeb on the thread and I'm not invited?

TW’s putt on 18 was so sad to watch how short he left it, his hands were Jello. Stewart was a world beater today with nerves of steel with all the hype TW had. I look forward to his next tourney.

Ironic, isn’t it? Next thing we’ll know, not only does Stewart tweets, but he FReeps too? Maybe that will happen soon.

When I go to Firestone in a couple of weeks, I’ll have to make sure FR gets its due!!

I didn’t see Tom’s press conference till tonight and anyone who watched could have easily had tears before he was done. He said he would have hit a 9 iron if given another chance. I think he hit the right club. Problem is he hit it with a 25mph wind straight downwind. If he could of hit a shot low enough to keep the wind away from it, that ball stays on the green and.......How classy to have been happy for Stew and to the whole surroundings the last 4 days.

I just got back home after spending a couple of hours watching a crew lay down sealcoat on my newly paved parking lot. Just more stuff that had to get done. Now if only I could reap the benefits of all the improvements......some day soon!!!

Talk about "smiling from ear to ear!". My jaw hurt this morning from all the grinning!

We fully appreciate how many people wanted Tom to win. Heck, I couldn't even pull against him ... well, till the last hole. Then, I had to think maybe it was Stewart's turn. Yeah!

That was my twin sister who posted the earlier comment about TW. It didn't occur to me till I read your post - how ironic that another "TW" was there at the end!

We love going to Firestone. Won't be able to this year, though - going to Minneapolis for the PGA!

The only thing that could have made it more perfect would have been if Tom didn’t have to lose in order for Stewart to win. Sigh.

Congratulations to Stewart Cink, the latest Ramblin’ Wreck to win the British Open (joining David Duval and that other guy Bobby Jones...). If Tom Watson had to lose, I’m glad Stewart Cink won!

I’ve been dying to get on FR since yesterday and congratulate you. What an awesome win for my favorite player on the tour! You must be so proud.

Now I need to log back into my Twitter account after a couple of months off and see what he has to say.

I started to watch Tom's presser and had to turn it off. The grimace on his face was too hard to bare. Looked like he was going to breakdown any minute. Couldn't take it. Watching the last 8 holes was gut wrenching enough, and I had the benefit of a DVR. I can't imagine watching and waiting in real time to get to the 18th hole, that would have been even more agony.

Is Anne Stewart's SIL? How cool is that! That means Stewart is a conservative? Tom's caddy is some bigwig political consultant whom I've never heard of, but the announcer's kept saying he and Tom were on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Does that mean Tom is a conservative too?

Anne is Stewart’s mom.

I got the impression Tom’s caddy was a (Scottish) liberal consultant. And, yes, since they said he’s the “opposite” of Tom’s persuasion...well, I took it that Tom’s a conservative. What else would he be?!!!!

Thought I’d fall off the couch on the Tiger one.

While we waited for him to come on, we all speculated on what WE would do with a night in NYC and all that new prize money.

When I first read this headline, I thought it said "diner" and speculated that your family may be going into the restaurant business. :)

British Open champ Cink buys area family dinner

Peachtree City fans send champagne, which golfer's party drinks from Claret Jug

By DOUG ROBERSON The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

1:58 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009

A simple dinner and a movie turned into a night to remember for the Yarbrough family of Peachtree City.

Elaine, husband Rudy, daughter Lilly and son Evan were eating at Houston's restaurant on Lenox Road on Monday when they were told that a party would soon be entering the room.

Elaine told the hostess that was fine.

Soon, in walked Stewart Cink, his family and a group of friends, ready to celebrate his win at the British Open on Sunday.

Elaine said they watched the Open on Sunday, but didn't recognize the Cinks. A few minutes later, Lilly recognized Stewart and they saw the Claret Jug.

"They were the nicest, classiest party for a group that large," Elaine said.

Because the Cinks thought they were disturbing the Yarbrough's dinner, they offered to pay for their dinner.

In return, Rudy sent over some champagne, which the Cink group drank out of the Jug.

Stewart came over and chatted with the family for a few moments afterward.

The Yarbroughs were only at the restaurant because they wanted to see the movie "The Hurt Locker" at a nearby theater.

As they walked into the restaurant Elaine said she saw a van that was loaded with golf bags, but didn't think much of it.

She said it turned into "a really fun experience."

Ya know, I don’t think I’ve EVER before read stories about the Jug and its travels. It’s almost like a Flat Stanley thing.

Is it Twitter? Or is Stewart showing it more than most? Just wondering.

I’ve heard of other winners doing it too.
So it’s not that suprising....
