Since no one else is commenting I will say that I read the entire speech and I have nothing negative to say about it. And he was able to say some things that perhaps other presidents could not have said.
I could only read a few paragraphs without stronger coffee, but these two quotes made me pause. “(As I said in Cairo, each nation gives life to democracy in its own way, and in line with its own traditions.) But history offers a clear verdict: Governments that respect the will of their own people, that govern by consent and not coercion, are more prosperous, they are more stable, and more successful than governments that do not.” He has governed without consent and with coercion, so how can he say that?
In the 21st century, capable, reliable, and transparent “institutions are the key to success — strong parliaments; honest police forces; independent judges — (applause); an independent press; a vibrant private sector; a civil society. (Applause.) Those are the things that give life to democracy, because that is what matters in people’s everyday lives.”
So now he is lecturing on an independent press, vibrant private sector. Again, a lot of words without substance.
Well, I’ll chip in: he says we must be strong supporters of democracy in Africa, but we know also he says we can’t meddle in such affairs in the Middle East and he’s actively worked against the lawful democracy in Honduras.
